Macy's (especially for couches -- you have to dig through a lot of ugly things but they actually have terrific modern couches that are very affordably priced when you have to furnish an entire house). Room & Board for beds, end and side tables, and shelving. West Elm and Wayfair for living room chairs. Article for coffee table and dining table and chairs. Cost Plus World Market for some smaller and more decorative items. The quality is low so I would not buy anything here that will get a lot of wear and tear. But I have a cute painted writing desk and stool from here that really brightens up our bedroom. CB2 and Crate & Barrell for everything else. We also have a handful of thinks bought at consignment stores and flea markets, but they were acquired a long time ago when we had more time for that kind of shopping. It's so hard to do when you have young kids! But if you have a larger home to furnish, it can be good to get in the habit of swinging by an outdoor market on the weekend just to see what they have -- you never know when you might stumble across something just right. We have this ridiculous wooden chair (it's huge and heavy and very striking looking) in our entryway that was a flea market find many years ago, and it's like a family member we're so fond of it. Stuff like that makes a house feel more lived in and homey. You need it to balance out the mass produced stuff, whether its from Ikea or somewhere fancier.
