paying non resident tuition to attend Fairfax Co Public Schools -- any info greatly appreciated

Anonymous
Looking into this as an option for a myriad of reasons (better school district, supports parent-share/visitation w/ ex-husband), but am having difficulty getting info on process, cost, constraints, etc. Left a couple of messages on Fairfax County PS voicemail. So my friends on DCUM...

*do you know anyone that has utilized this option successfully?
*is it a popular w/in the school system or a "secret" avenue in?
*costs? ease of access/application?

Any info truly, truly appreciated. I am pitifully in the dark here, so I'll welcome it all!

Thanks

I don't know anyone who does this. Have you tried contacting this school directly? They may have some info for you on how to go about applying.

I once knew a family from Maryland who paid tuition to send their child to a FCPS elementary and middle school. They didn't seem to have any connection to FCPS, except that one parent occasionally worked as a substitute teacher.

There's a regulation on the FCPS web site with more information about this option, including the annual cost. I believe it's about $13,000 or $14,000 per year, plus more for students who need special education or ESOL or other extra services.

Don't you have anyone's address you can use? LOL

good luck finding the info!

I once was able to find the info on using Arlingotn Co's school but it was buried on their website. A few years ago the fee was $11K for their school system. I figured I was better off just paying for private.

Here's a link to the policy, which suggests the child has to live in Fairfax County with a nonparent, or some other special exception has to apply.

From "Starting School" there's the following:

Tuition is charged for students whose parents do not live in Fairfax County. Contact Student Registration at 703-876-5231 for enrollment of nonresident students.

I think you'd also want to check that the school isn't full. There are certain schools that are at full capacity and won't let non-residents in for immersion programs, etc. I tried to find the list just now and couldn't.
