| DD is a rising senior and interested in going out of state, looking for a large school with lots of school spirit. Would need to give merit aid to offset out of state costs and University of Kansas seems to fit that bill. Niche reviews of the school seem to be great. Was wondering if anyone has any other knowledge or experience with the school. Would it be a culture shock for an east coast suburban kid coming to KU? DD is interested in UW Madison(reach) and Indiana as well but their outrageous out of state costs don’t seem to justify the outcomes of the education. Would she get a similar experience as Big Ten schools by going to Kansas. Their school spirit for basketball seems particularly strong. |

| Please shoot for Wisonsin and Indiana if she's looking for Big Ten school spirit. Other options could be OSU, UIUC, Michigan, even MSU... I think Kansas would be hard. |

KU isn’t not the same as Wisconsin, but it’s a nice university in a cute town, and it’s near Kansas City. A UMD who could handle life in Chevy Chase should be able to handle KU. |

| I don't know much about the academics, but it is a pretty, surprisingly hilly campus. The basketball team is huge so lots of school spirit around that. There is definitely out of state merit aid to be had there with the right scores. |

| Great town and campus. Excellent honors program. Read the Fiske Guide write up. They give it 4 stars for academics (5 is highest). |

Are you from the US? Most people don’t live in their college town forever. There’s a reason why it’s called “going away to college.” |

I went to KU. It's a great place and an extremely liberal college town. It may not be considered a great school but there are a lot of opportunities if you want them. I was in the Honors College, did a year study abroad, research projects in 2 departments, taught lab classes and won a Goldwater. Friends had similar paths and we ended up at the best Universities in the country for grad/med school.

| OP here. Was wondering if the social scene is similar to schools like Indiana and OSU? Greek like seems to be only 20 percent which isn’t overwhelming compared to southern schools. Are students there mostly friendly…. and being from OOS would you feel out of place. Concerned about that as we are from nyc area and she has never been to the far midwest. Mizzou is another school with similar out of state scholarships and rankings but it seemed to have a bad rep when I posted it here a while ago. . |

KU grad here. I was an out of state student and I didn't feel out of place. Some of my friends were out of staters, some from Kansas, some were international students. It's a mid sized state school so there is enough going on to find your crew. I wasn't in the Greek community and none of my friends were either.
I can't say anything good about Misery but that's cause I went to KU

I’m a bit biased but it’s much better than Mizzou. Really friendly people and plenty from out of state. I grew up there (didn’t go there but have strong connections) and many of my friends who moved away (some to the DC area) have kids who have returned there for college. If you are Jewish, there is a strong Jewish community on campus. |
