Our kids are getting older and I’m thinking of downsizing my 3 row SUV to a smaller one. It occurs to me that we don’t need as much space now that we don’t haul strollers etc. just wondering if I’m being short sighted and will miss the space. We don’t carpool so I don’t need more than 3 seats for kids.
I'm not going to downsize until we are done with the college years and all the crap hauling. But I don't mind driving a slightly larger SUV until then.
We went the minivan route and still have one as we are in the high school / college phase. Daily carpooling ended with nursery school but we are glad to have the space on a regular basis. We do "driving" vacations so it gets loaded up for that, picking up extra kids on the way to the beach / school / shopping, taking the lawn mower to my friend's house, Home Depot runs, etc.
I would keep it until all kids can drive long distances themselves and have a car to drive available. |
I am going to wait until they graduate from HS. If we need a bigger SUV/van for hauling crap to/from college, we will rent.
We just bought an Outback for my two teens who are getting their licenses soon, and I traded in my Yukon XL to drive it until they are fully licensed in Dec (they are currently learning to drive on the Outback). We have 3 kids at home, and even with the teens driving alone soon, we need an SUV with a 3d row for car trips and getting around comfortably when we do all need to be in my car at the same time. The plan is to buy a smaller 3 row SUV in the late fall (leaning toward an X7).

We never sized up to anything bigger than a Mazda 5. I’d love an electric Mini
