Commuter car -- gas or electric?

Our oldest child will be attending a private school in MoCo in the fall and we will be traveling from Upper Marlboro. Both our our current vehicles take premium gas so we are considering an alternative. Should be get a used Honda or Toyota that takes regular gas or an EV? Looking for a budget friendly option. Thanks!

EV should be lifecycle more cost effective. But a Leaf, not a Tesla.

You aren’t very credible if you quote the price of the EV without acknowledging the $7,500 tax credit it gets. Right there you’ve cut the difference between the two in half, and that’s before significantly cheaper fuel and maintenance for the EV.

I don’t know which one will end up being cheape but the difference won’t be great (and the EV would be a lot more fun probably).

Never buy a Nissan. Ever. Their gas cars have terrible CVT transmissions and their electric cars have very bad batteries.

don't forget resale. A civic or corolla holds value. An electric kia or Nissan won't. And if you keep it long term, the battery replacement is going to erase the maintenance savings. Buy an electric because they are good for the environment, because they are fun, or because you don't like gas stations. Don't buy one to save money

A used Niro (or a used Leaf or Bolt) would be cheaper, though, and if you're not driving huge amounts every day, then the battery size would be fine. The Leaf gets between 150 and 220 miles, which seems just fine for a commuter car.

Civics are $25k, but you'll be paying gas, oil changes, spark plugs, etc. Lots of moving parts. Also no visits to the gas station ever.

We own a 2014 electric car and it's been in for service once, to rotate the tires. No other service needed.

With federal tax rebate of 4500, MD tax credit, plus credit to help you install a charger at home, will be close to 23k.

With the EV fully charged you get 80 mpg. Plus you can use HOV all the time. Might check your kids feel comfortable in the backseat, can be a bit cramped.

You can use HOV all the time with any electric car in MD. Note it applies to MD HOV lanes only, not other states.

wow, they really can't sell those things. 10k off the top for a new car now seems absurd
