Possible to switch preschools at age 3?

Anonymous
DS is 2 and We are moving to DC from NYC in a few weeks. I know we've missed the cut off for many schools, but it seems like some places still have openings for their 2s programs. Since he is still so young, I think he will be fine wherever he ends up for the coming year, but wonder if it is possible/common to switch the following year (if we aren't happy wherever he ends up). Has anyone been through this or something similar? We'll be in Chevy Chase DC. Thanks.

some schools, like st columba's, don't even accept kids until they are 3. i wouldn't worry about it.

Perhaps it was just a quirk that year, but when I was looking for a pre-K program for my fall-birthday daughter who missed the K cut-off a year ago, I cannot tell you the number of schools I visited, good schools people talk about on these boards, that said "we can take her right now." I was actually happy with her preschool so I did not move her early and I got into all 4 programs I applied to for this fall.

most montessori programs also start at three.

We changed from a co-op at age 2 to a traditional nursery school at age 3. No big deal.

We're also in chevy chase and I had trouble getting into a neighborhood school at 2. We went farther afield that year and then moved him this past fall at 3. Do what you can for the coming year and move next year if necessary.

Thanks so much, everyone.

We lived in another city when my daughter was 3 and she attended one preschool for one year and then we moved back to DC when she was 4 and she attended another. In my case, I had my mom serve as proxy and apply to a couple schools for us including one at which we had no connection whatsoever. She ended up getting into both.

We might be changing every year. Age 2 at school A and B. Age 3 at special ed school. Age 4 at School A and special ed program, and if he needs it age 5 at school B and special ed school.
