NOVA/DC Clubs that Go to Disney/Dallas Cup/Surf Cup

Anonymous
My son joined Bethesda Super Y this year. A few of the new parents were asking which clubs in NOVA/DC go to the big name college showcases like Dallas Cup, Surf Cup, Disney, Adidas Potomac, and all the big ticket best of the a country tournaments? My son plays for an ECNL club, but we really only do Jefferson Cup, Bethesda Cup, and one down in Raleigh. Are there local clubs who go to Disney or surf?

Arlington took a couple of teams to Dallas two or three years ago, but have not since. I think it was something that one coach wanted to do, so he did, but he is no longer with the club.

What's astounding is colleges don't just swoop in and fill their roster needs from the couple of clubs in the area worthy of discussion and call it a day. Why colleges choose ANYONE outside of the MLSNext (formerly DA) or ECNL teams is beyond me. There's ZERO reason not to just call up Arlington, Bethesda, Loudoun, FCV, McLean, SYC, fill your spots and BAM. Done recruiting for the year. Why ANY school has to stoop so low as to recruit anyone from an EDP, CCL, NCSL team is beyond me. This would make recruiting so much more streamlined and quality of college teams would improve.

No college is "stooping" beyond their programs competitive environment and overall attractiveness as a school. If a small D2 teachers college in rural PA needs a center back they aren't getting many ECNL players.

D3 offer varying levels of competitiveness versus academic quality as well. For mid tier D1, D2's and a variety of D3's lots of rosters are filled out with EDP and CCl players. And while still calling the big clubs like Arlington may be able to point out kids that fit their profile it may not be a school the player is at all interested in attending.

Recruiting is very much a two ways street beyond the big D1 and prestigious D3 schools.

ECNL afraid to allow SYC to join cause they would smash through the league

Yes. These other leagues often confuse many college coaches. You really have to be plugged into travel soccer to understand the different leagues and the way they are marketed to parents. If only these other leagues would go away. Any college coach worth his/her salt knows the bench warmer at MLSnext or ECNL is a far better player vs anyone else in the age group.

I think this is mostly correct. But my oldest son did play NPL (Now ECNL-RL) and he plays at a mid tier division 1 school in Florida. If you play in a decent, but not great league, you have to really sell yourself to coaches and perform up to par at Id camps and combines verse top league kids.

MLS Next is a better platform than ECNL is for boys. SYC does not want to be in ECNL and the girls are now in ECNL via Union.

Simply untrue. MLS NEXT has no stability. When DA folded, most of the players jumped ship to ECNL. ECNL is the stable preferred league for coaches.

SYC parent here. If MLS Next was the best platform, we would've focused on MLS Next and not ECNL via VA Union.

Also, there are virtually no girls going to VA Union. I believe there's a total of nine or so, and they're all 2009, 2008, and 2007 (who were only at SYC this one year). There's no girls from SYC's 2006, 2005, 2004/2003 teams going to VA Union.

Correcto. MYS has blocked Arlington from joining ECNL for years and when they finally couldn't they needed an answer for their boys program (which has really struggled in ECNL). They entered the partnership with SYC solely for the boys, and any of the 1-2 girls (per age group) would just be an added bonus. When SYC then got awarded MLS Next, well let's just say there's been an element of distrust new to the equation to this partnership. MLS Next is just branding for recruitment; it's MLS 2.

It's plenty stable. That's why we saw ECNL players coming over to MLSNext clubs to try out this spring. There will be some good ECNL clubs and teams for boys in the area but the bulk of talent in the DMV on the boys side will gravitate to MLSNext. I think the longer term question for some boys is whether they'll buy into not playing for their high school, and for others, whether they'll buy into a much more limited schedule of practices and games with their club.

I don't agree. You'd keep the best platform for your own boys and use MYS to improve your girls pipeline into ECNL teams. You can also put your second team boys onto ECNL teams. You think the Woodbridge boys want to go all the way out to McLean for ECNL? That is the part of the pipeline that will go to SYC for MLSNext. Ultimately, regardless of its purpose, the collaboration will be minimal and potentially harmful to both clubs for the many reasons that people identified almost as soon as it was announced.
