Just found out my 16 yr old is vaping cannabis. What now?

He told me it gets rid of his anxiety and he isn't addicted (doubtful). He takes medication for ADHD and he says he hates the way it makes him feel. Okay. He said vaping makes his anxiety go away and helps him sleep. What do I do now? I told him we can talk to the doctor about his ADHD medication. I can't figure out where he is getting this from. He says he found it but I know that isn't true. He has a part-time job so he makes some money but we don't live anywhere near where he could buy it. He can't drive. He hasn't seen any friends in a while so I'm stumped.

"He has a part time job." Probably has a connection at the job, most likely source.

Talk to the doctor about it. A good friend of mine has better luck with weed to relieve anxiety than with prescriptions. I would be concerned about the vape delivery though.

Would he be willing to try cbd?

No normal life, no job, no friends, no phone/WiFi/computer until full disclosure (and abandonment of the absurd “found it” story.) make appt with doctor to talk about anxiety and sleep issues. Get otc drug test (it will be positive for a while but once negative institute periodic checks.) Tell him about the increased risk of psychosis for adolescents who use cannabis. (I also have a 16 year old. This is what o would do.)

Thanks PPs. He just started the job so I don't think that's the source. I guess it's possible he could've walked to buy it but don't they require an ID for proof of age? I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow. He has a medication check in two weeks. I don't know anything about CBD.

CBD is cannabis oil, mostly without the active thc compounds or with very little.

I use it instead of weed, to help with my anxiety, especially to sleep. It's legal, and can be ordered over the web or purchased in most health stores. I order over the web.

If you ds just started the job, he probably has am arrangement with someone. I would be more concerned about the vaping part than the weed part. Offer him some cbd specifically to help with sleep. I get gummies from Charlotte's Web in CO. See if the dr. has any suggestions.

If he just started the job, he probably has a connection that supplies him with the vape.

It’s pretty normal at this age ADHD or not.

I would not freak out but seek to understand.

Check in with a therapist to ensure this is not masking a bigger problem.

See if the therapist can help with the anxiety issue.

Thank you PPs. I guess I'm a bit freakout out because relatives on both sides of his family have past addiction issues (alcohol) and I know how many issues it caused.

I don’t think you need to freak out but some pps don’t seem to be aware that cannabis for teenagers is totally different than for adults whose brains are formed and are past the high risk period for developing schizophrenia. I would be calm and loving but take it very seriously. Also, for him to tell you such a dumb story about finding it you have to wonder what else he’s getting up to. Good luck.

As a parent of grown children I would like to say that at 16 you need to treat him as a soon-to-be-an-adult person, not as a kid who needs punishing or discipline. Help him figure this out. He may end up using something to help him with his anxiety and counteract med issues but he needs to do it thoughtfully and intelligently. You can help with that. I hope you are able to open a real line of communication with this kid. It will benefit you both for many years to come. Maybe start by accepting that he should have a significant say in what works for him. He clearly needs guidance, though, yours and perhaps a doctor or other professional.

“Some pps” are aware they also know freaking out and acting like experimenting and pushing boundaries at 16 is abnormal will cause more harm than cannabis.

I would punish him and tell him he's grounded for a month for lying and vaping but if he tells you the truth it will be two weeks however next time he does it, he quits the job and grounded for a month.

I’d get a medical card for myself and make sure he’s got access to good quality weed from a dispensary. Weed is better than adderall.
