Is the Georgetown Day School Nuturing?

Anonymous
Hello,

I would like to know if the Georgetown Day School is nuturing?. I have a daughter that is very sensitive, but she is not shy. I am wondering if this school would be a good fit. I would also like to know if the teacher are harsh or loving. It seems like a really busy place and I don't want my daughter to get discouraged.

I, too, have a sensitive DC and GDS has been a good fit. Lots of hugs, lots of long-term relationships with faculty members, everybody knows your name (and more than a few know your personality/quirks)! Kids are all over the map (some are heart-warmingly wonderful), but the adults are consistently engaged, kind, and supportive in our experience.

I think that the early elementary faculty at GDS are very nurturing.

To be honest I'm beginning to wonder what this means. Especially at the lower grades. All schools are nurturing for children who are 4, 5, 6. I don't think that you'll see a sizable difference in that one quality among any of the privates. That's part of their job and they will all discuss teaching the whole child. Personally I think it's a fruitless pursuit.

Well, as someone who went to public school, I was really struck by how huggy the kids and teachers are (through LS -- including 4th and 5th graders) at GDS compared to the way it was when I grew up. I was also really touched listening to one of the librarians help a middle schooler choose a new novel -- you could hear years of a history of shared books between teacher and student as they debated various titles.

Maybe every private school in this area has that and this isn't a distinguishing feature of GDS -- I don't know. What I do know is that it's not a universal feature of elementary schools.

We moved to GDS in MS. I would say it is nurturing in the sense that the school is really about the kids - each individual kid. It goes along with the idea of tolerating wide ranges of people. My DC found, not popularity, but great acceptance by students and teachers alike. I don't know how they do it - was at other very good schools with my children, and GDS is really special in this way.
