I'm not the OP, but I'm curious why the Apple store is better? I've always bought from my carrier because it seems easier, is there some disadvantage to doing this?

apple store phones are sold unlocked making it very easy to switch carries if you ever need to. If the price is the same, you are better off buying from apple and just taking the SIM card from the old phone and putting it in the new one (that also avoids the pointless activation fee)

I've dealt with Verizon store and AT & T store people who have given me inaccurate information regarding Apple products and a few have been downright clueless. At an Apple store, you'll deal with Apple employees who know the products inside and out.
