Mostly for watching Netflix. Maybe I’ll play Angry Birds or something, and read WSJ.
I already have a work computer and gaming PC for when I need to do serious work. Is there any reason why I would need something like an iPad? Maybe since I already have an iPhone? Or should I just go out and buy a cheap tablet with a big screen? |
The synchronization between the iPad and the iPhone for all your apps and passwords and settings is worth the premium imho. |
Agreed. |

This. Get an iPad. |
Nope. I completely disagree with everyone else. I pads are expensive, and you can run internet, netflix and angry birds on almost any old tablet for hundreds of $ less. If you need it to be connected to all of your other accounts then yes an Ipad will be easiest, but if you really just want it for what you said, save some $ and drop $150 on a android tablet. it will get the job done and you can save the rest of the cash to upgrade your pc/phone. |
The basic iPad with 32G is $329 and totally worth it IMO. |
I am thinking of getting my first tablet. (I just retired).
I will use it to read the New York Times, and email. Perhaps take movies or ebooks on trips. I am used to an iPhone, but otherwise use pc’s (not MACs). What should I get? |
And if I get an iPad…do I get a mini? A keyboard? The pen thingy??
Help! |
I have owned all 3 sizes of iPads. Like you, I’m retired and use my iPad for emails, social media and reading my newspapers. I think a basic iPad would suit you well. The mini is too small for your needs (but might be perfect for someone else). I use the 13” Pro model and I really like the size of it personally. If $ isn’t a problem you might consider the 13” Air. |
I have a regular iPad 9th generation with a smart keyboard (I don’t like using the onscreen keyboard) and it has replaced my laptop for almost everything. Bought it to play games but it turned out to be very useful. If you already have an iPhone then an iPad is great; otherwise just a cheap tablet would probably be fine. |
Yes. |
I have an Amazon tablet. I use it almost exclusively for Netflix, Hulu etc and it’s perfect for that. I also use it for the Libby app to read books and Spotify for music.
There are some games that aren’t available on it but I don’t really care about that. I sometimes use the browser which is fine. |
I have the same. It cost about $49 during some sale. It is great for traveling as I free myself from the weight of a laptop. I download books and audiobooks from Libby at the library, I can surf the net while on hotel/home wifi, and the 8 inch screen is much better for watching movies than a phone. I use my phone for email, messages, camera, etc. My Amazon fire has a 3.5 earjack spot so I can use the cheap wired earbuds, as well as Bluetooth earbuds. I'm not sure what my husband gets for his iPad that costs hundreds more. |
Get the new mini. There should be another sale at some point where it drops to $399. Don’t get a keyboard or pencil right away. Get a glass screen protector and a case. I recommend the official Apple case or the ESR kickstand case. Zugu is a close third if you don’t mind the extra bulk. |
