When will we hear about math placement for next year for middle school kids? My DS is at DHMS and we still haven't heard anything. Will it come with the report card? I assume the report card will be posted sometime today?

Usually sent in a letter over the summer. |
You expect to hear about math placement for next year during the last few days of school, when the entire staff is packing up, turning in grades, and focusing on the 8th grade promotion? You sound very entitled. |
Yes. Instead of when a bunch of people who don’t know my kid are left to just do it without being able to reach out to teachers who actually know my kid. |
It’s a reasonable question. School is ending and the people making the recommendation are done and likely have submitted it. The question is when will they share with parents. See the thread about Math Inventory. It was well over a month ago, no reason a test that was done online and therefore already scored hasn’t yet been shared with parents. |
I’m not looking for SOL percentiles. I know those come in the summer. Just math placement for the fall. |
I’m not talking about test scores. We heard about placement at the end of school last year (and the previous year). |
Exactly. Plus, my son had four math teachers this year so I’m don’t know who would even provide input for him at this point. |
You should talk to your child and decide independently. It's your decision in the end anyway. |
Actually, for sixth grade it is not. |
Did they just change the rules? Most parents don't overrule the placement, but up until last year, you could. And we did. |
This isn't how it works. The teachers may make recommendations based on performance and scores, but the math coaches and guidance counselors make the placements. |
Again, for my rising sixth grader, a guidance counselor and math coach who have never met my kid. |

You cannot expect a 5th grade teacher from an elementary school to make class assignments for a 6th grader in a middle school. They don't even work there, and even if they did, this is not part of a classroom teacher's job. The 5th grade teacher will make recommendations, and the middle school guidance counselor and staff will set the class assignments. This would be the case even in a private school. |
My kid just finished 6th grade. We were told that the APS math office decides which math 6th graders take— not anyone at the elementary OR middle school. Which is nuts & means that the process is based entirely on test scores. They don’t know anything else about your kid nor do they consider anything else. |
