Daycare injuries frequency?

First time mom and my 10 month old has been at an in-home daycare since April. In the first month he got a pretty bad scratch (maybe 1 inch) on his leg - bad enough that you can still see it now but very faintly. They showed it to me at pick up, where I didn't realize how bad it was. I called later and discussed it with them and it seemed clear that they didn't know exactly how it happened. Fast forward to this week, and he fell somehow and hurt his lip and chin. Already looks a lot better today, and it seems reasonable this would happen since he just started trying to cruise.

My question is - how normal is it that they don't seem to have details of exactly how these things happen? Is two minor injuries in a few months normal? I want to make sure I'm not ignoring signs of him not being adequately supervised. This is especially a concern because we're still not allowed in due to covid.

That's not typical in my experience. A toddler, yes, they fall a lot. But a crawling baby having injuries is more of a yellow flag here. I don't think it's enough to throw out the place if there's other things you like, but keep your eyes open.

Your 10 month old who pretty much is in super exploration mode has a scratch and bump on the chin over the past 60 days and you’re concerned? You must keep him in a bubble at home. At 10 months old, children should be exploring, working on mobility, and plus he’s in daycare, around other kids who touch each other, take from each other, and even bite each other from time to time. Expect many more bumps and bruises along the way.

they have no idea what happened - that’s concerning. I wonder if OP has other reasons to be concerned?

I don’t recall a single injury at daycare/nanny share. Maybe one scratch?

Our provider (we've done nannyshare and inhome) would always text us with a photo and what happened any time there was any sort of injury, and I only remember a couple minor ones.

My 2 yo has been in daycare since she was 5 months and she has had small scratches but never anything I would describe as an "injury". When she was an infant we would get a call and a written report if she so much as bumped her head, even though there was no bruise or mark.

A large scratch with no explanation or knowledge of how it happened IS unusual IMO.

Yeah they are usually overly cautious in the infant room. I remember getting a report when someone dropped a small toy on my kid's forehead, though there was no mark and they showed me the toy and it was like, a light rattle.

OP, Due to your childs age, the injuries are not at all normal. A baby in daycare should never have scratches let alone a inch long. I would be concerned that whatever daycare your child is in, he/she isn't being properly cared for during the day

I recommend finding either a loving nanny or another daycare center to go to that will protect your child from injuries. yes not all injuries are preventable ( some scratches here or there) but they shouldn't be big and last as long as you mentioned

Totally normal. Just wait in no time he’ll be nothing but bumps from exploration and daycare will be wondering if they have to call CPS on you.

Scratches and bumps happen. I would be concerned that they Don't know how it happened.

It is not ok they did not know what happened to a 10 month old. I am not a reactionary parent, that is not acceptable.

This. And big scratches are a bit more surprising for that age group. My kid had an “ouch report” about once a week for a series of weeks when she first was learning to walk. But they were all very minor - it was just required if they bump heir head at all. Teachers knew how each happened.

Daycare does not have eyes on the baby for the entire time. They have to turn their backs to assist another child or get bottles, change diapers. So they’re being truthful to tell you didn’t know. Would you rather they lie and make up a story? It could’ve been something as simple as your own babies finger nails scratching him.

You are a first time mom so I see why you’re concerned but not a single parent on this board can tell you that they know exactly where their child has gone every single injury. Sometimes kids get hurt and you just don’t know how.

I would be more worried that they don’t know how it happened. Two minor injuries in two months doesn’t seem off, but they should be able to say “he was cursing while I changed a kid’s diaper and blah blah”.

The scratch less so - they might not have noticed when it happened even if they were watching. I frequently find scratches on my baby and can’t place when it happened because it wasn’t really an injury. Their skin scratches so easily at that age.
