Why do women wear baseball caps when they exercise in the heat?

Anonymous
I didn't want to hijack the excellent jogging skirt thread with my burning question, but they are definitely companion questions because ... just, why?

So what I don't get is this popular exercise look: the one wear the woman -- and importantly, only women -- wear a hat to go running when it's 80+ degrees. Why would you want to make yourself hotter? FWIW, the hat is always a white, pink or black little cap, usually a Nike. Never a visor, interestingly, like a golfer might wear.

Everybody knows that you wear a hat in order to trap heat in your body and stay warm.

Funny. I always wonder about this too. If I were to wear one, I'd pass out from being overheated. They must have some hair issues or they sweat a lot and the cap soaks up the sweat.

Not to trap the heat on your head, or people would never wear them in summer.

It's also to keep the sun OFF of your head, and out of your eyes. And to keep the sweat from running into your eyes.

Wear thin ones, and some people (like me) don't sweat much. I don't want sun on my face, forehead, or in my eyes....and it keeps my hair from straggling into my face.

I am very fair skinned and am downright obsessive compulsive about sun protection, especially since I've already had some age spots removed from my face - not a fun experience and not one I want to go through again. Dermatologist's advice: stay out of the sun. So I am a fan of hats, etc.

Though I try to run in the early morning before the sun is bad, if I couldn't, I could see wearing a hat.

I'm unlikely to have done my hair if I'm going to exercise and my hair is short enough that I can't pull it back, so a hat gets thrown on so I don't scare people.

You know they have holes in them to breathe, right? I mean ball players wear them during their games, in the summer, and I don't remember any reports of excessive overheating due to their hats.

I always wear a hat to keep the sun off my face. I wear sunscreen too, but sweat can wash it away, so I wear that hat to be sure.

To protect your head and face from UV rays. They are very light and the special fabric is very breathable. Often the underpart of the visor is a darker color so the light doesn't reflect back into your face. A lot of men wear running caps too.

Ditto.

I never wear visors because I have dark hair and my head gets HOT when I'm outside in the sun, especially if I'm exercising. It's always a light colored cap for me.

This is ridiculous. You don't wear wool hats that cover your ears in the summer. They're lightweight ventilated baseball caps. Have you ever worn one???

Me too plus I don't wear sunglasses so it keeps the sun out of my eyes.

I color my hair -- it's expensive and time-consuming, so I wear a hat to protect the color.

Sun off face and sweat. Visor is ideal for summer, but doesn't protect scalp/hair.

My scalp burns
My hair color bleaches out, so I cover it
I need the sun protection for my face
I need my hair out of my eyes
My daughter gave me the hat for my birthday
Somtimes my hair is greasy, and I run into people I know
It keeps the sun out of my eyes
