Move from DC HRCS to MCPS (Blair/Enstein)

Anonymous
We're in DC and at a charter. I'm concerned about the long term pathway for the school and we're debating a move to Takoma Park or Silver Spring, preferably in bound for Blair High School. DC seems academically inclined and is above or on grade level, but probably not a candidate for the MCPS magnets. Though it's hard to really know because I question whether the charters are less rigorous, so above grade level in DC would be on grade level in another school district.

Part of our decision is losing the language immersion component, and also comparing elementary school quality. I'd like to stay as long as "possible" (i.e., through elementary) to keep the language going, but not if DC will get behind academically and need to play catch up once we move. Financially it would also be nice to put off the move a few more years. If you made a similar move - when did you move; from what school to what school; and were your kids behind or ahead in any areas? Would you do it the same or differently if you could do it again?

** EINSTEIN. Sorry for the typo!

Please specify which language your child is being immersed in. I have heard many good things about Einstein's French program; it seems to be popular with strong students. There is also Japanese. Spanish at Einstein has the benefit of being able to hold upper-level classes with native/heritage speakers of the language. My DD was able to place into these classes her last two years. Back-to-school night was a hoot; the teacher spoke in Spanish during the entire presentation and seems surprised when I asked a question in English afterwards. You probably will find similar opportunities at Blair. One point to consider - college admissions may be more difficult for a non-Magnet student at Blair because colleges have unofficial quotas. Top students at Einstein stand out more.

I had a non-magnet kid graduate from Blair, a non-magnet kid currently attending Blair, and a magnet kid at a a different HS. I myself graduated from an all-girls prep school. I’m pleased with non-magnet Blair.

Just a note that you can "test into" the language immersion magnets in MCPS after 2nd grade, and there is bus transportation for the immersion programs, so you might not have to give that up.
