Detroit recommendations and parking

Anonymous
Looking for tips for a couple of days in Detroit with kids age 9 and 11. (Next month) Also does anyone have insight into parking in downtown Detroit? Are there any alternatives to paying $30 a night hotel parking?

Hi-

Greenfield Village and Henry Ford museum in Dearborn are fantastic.

The Detroit historical society is great. And the Detroit institute of arts is one of the 5 largest US collections.

I haven’t looked bed there for decades, some park groups knowledge is not great, but I do remember hotel parking being very pricy when I went for a friends bachelorette party. I parked a bit further away and used the people mover to get to the hotel. But the hotel parking might be more secure.

Enjoy your trip

Thing to do: A baseball game.

Make sure your car is parked in a secure lot. I lived in the area and had a few friends who tried to cheap out on paring and it was an expensive choice

I love Detroit!!!

First parking tickets are 40 dollars and Detroit parking enforcement is extremely effective, I’ve gotten tickets literally 2 min after meters expire, so always pay!!! That said you can pretty easily find parking you don’t have to pay for in side streets and such but honestly not worth the trouble as a tourist.

Rose’s Fine Foods is the best diner ever, get the patty melt, the Wall Street journal agrees with me.

Eastern market makes dc eastern market look like a trash dump, go on a Saturday when all the pavilions are full of vendors selling flowers and produce and random stuff.

Kids will probably like Belle Isle, has a free aquarium that is something straight out of Wes Anderson, this is near west village with detroit vegan soul and red hook coffee.

Get a Detroit pizza at sgt pepperonis in the Garden Bowl in midtown (bowling alley, pizzeria, with music venue upstairs). Great Lakes Coffee across the street for coffee and beer for adults. Two streets over is Jack white’s Third Man Records, nonfiction Source bookstore owned by a retired Detroit public schools teacher, and the delicious bakery Avalon.

The immediate downtown area near the Renaissance center is fine, kids might enjoy taking the monorail. Greek town has many depressing casinos and occasional stqbbinganon the weekend. Southwest Detroit has a lot of Canadians gone south of the border for mediocre Midwest Tex Mex. cork town is popping now with Ford — renovated Detroit central station, check it out.

Traffic Jam & Snug is next door to Third Man Records. Excellent locally sourced food and service, be sure to finish your meal with a fresh, hot chocolate chip giant cookie that the kids will love. The Piquette ave. Model T plant is open again, kids love that too. The Detroit Zoo is still very good. The penguin enclosure is a favorite.
Dime Store is a great upscale brunch spot with the kids. Don't forget to get some square Detroit pizza at Buddy's or coneys at American or Lafayette.

Just pay the parking at the hotel. You are going to pay close to that amount anywhere you go in a big city. And just Uber to the places you want to go. Cheaper and easier. You don’t have to ride around looking for parking and being worried about getting a ticket.

Second this recommendation. Nothing quite like these anywhere. And since you will be in Dearborn, go get some of the best Arabic food outside of the Middle East. My recs would be New Yasmin Bakery- I actually prefer their hot foods over their bakery items. Best shwarma, meat and spinach pies, order at the counter which makes it easy with kids. Shatilia bakery is where to go for baklava and baked goods.
