New house - how to deal with large yard for dogs

Anonymous
We’re moving into a house on 1+ acre next month. Currently the back yard is fenced on two sides and we will be getting a fence contractor to finish it up.
The back yard is very large and in addition to containing 2 dogs, I also want to create a fun outdoor space with a trampoline, fire pit, tire swing, etc.
I had a thought of maybe dividing the yard and keeping 1 side for the dogs and putting all the kid stuff on the other side so that the poop will stay on one side and be easier to clean up.
My larger dog is a border collie and likes to run, so if we do a run it will need to be fairly large anyway.
Does it make sense to divide the yard in this case? Or are we better off just keeping everything together?
I wish I could train my dogs to poop in once place but lately they just poop randomly on the grass.
It’s hard enough staying on top of it in our smaller yard now, so I can’t imagine it being easier finding all the poop in a big yard.
Any suggestions?

What??? You walk your dogs and clean up the poop when they poop on the walk. You don't let your dogs poop in the yard where your kids play! That's disgusting.

What about making a dog run (not huge but fenced and connected to the house by a door) just for potty stuff, but when you are outside having them roam the yard supervised??

Take the dogs for walks.

Make a quarter of the space for the kids, with the trampoline etc and let the dogs have the rest.

I do take the dogs on walks. 1 poops predictably on the walk, the other does not. I am liking the idea of a dog run separate from the rest of the yard.

When you let the dog out and it poops you immediately clean it up. If you allow the dogs out with the just your kids then you teach them to either clean it up right away or to let you know so you can. If you allow the dogs out for awhile unattended then when you let them in you search for poop and clean it up.

So let the dogs poop in other people's yards (but you cleaned it up so it's ok). If you can clean it up on a walk, you can clean it in your yard.

Just get in the habit of cleaning it up immediately after they go. We have a large yard and this is what we do. If you let it sit the flies get bad and it will smell on hot days.

Dividing the space seems like a great idea. I don’t know anybody who fenced the yard for their dogs and then doesn’t let them out without watching them to pick up poop each time. Most owners go out a few times a week and do that. Might be helpful to have direct access off house/deck into dog area so you can just let them out the door directly into safe area.

This is why I don’t want to fence my yard. I just know that no one other than me will actually go get it every time (and I won’t always be there). If it’s raining or they didn’t see where it went..I’m just convinced it will get gross. I think dividing the area is a great idea.

+1

We clean up pool immediately.

I’m surprised the dog will just go wherever? Our dog always chooses to go in a corner if she poops in the yard (or at the dog park- and most of the other dogs seem to as well) but of course every dog is different!

Pick up the poop immediately. I keep a roll of poop bags by the back door so it’s easy. You don’t want to attract flies and vermin into your yard.
