University of Missouri Columbia

Hi. I’m a rising senior researching schools that are preferably OOS(I live in NY state) and that are big public schools with good school spirit and sense of community. Missouri caught my attention because of how affordable it is for OOS, 41,000 total cost but has automatic scholarships to even further lower the cost. I’ve read on niche and other sites about the school but was wondering if anyone has any opinions, experiences, or thoughts about it, I know it’s not a “top” school in the mind of many people on here, hence the fact that there have been no threads about Mizzou. For reference, I want to go into a government agencies, particularly with security and intelligence later on. I know their journalism school is very highly ranked but I don’t know if I want that to be my major especially since I will need to have computer experience for jobs in security and intelligence.

Missouri is a perfectly fine institution. If you’re looking for colleges with good merit aid I’d also look into Arizona, Alabama, South Carolina, WVU etc. They give really good aid for high stats kids.

You may want to check state politics and laws around controlling our own body etc. and make sure they jibe with your personal preferences or be willing to change them if they don't.

OP please take this school off your list

1. Missouri is backwards and their public school system one of the worst in the country. Dude you will be at college with a huge bunch of idiots
2. There are many other better public Universities cheaper than that. NC State for one
or University of West Virginia or University of South Carolina ( they give tons of money}
3. University of Missouri has a horrible career center ie going to college idea get a job when you come out well that college has barely any contacts it’s on you .
4. Politically speaking Missouri is only going to get worse they elected Josh Hawley fist pump alt right liar. This will affect your experience there

Good luck in your search

And how do you know all of this? Are you a product of the Missouri public school system?

Anyone who thinks that the University of South Carolina is a "better" public University is not coming from a source of being informed, but from pushing a personal agenda.

OP, I have seen a lot of posts from you lately, asking about various colleges for finding work in the same industry. I think that this forum did a great job helping with the dc area schools, but you aren’t going to find anyone here who knows about much else, especially anyone with first hand experience with Missouri. You might have better luck on college confidential.

OP, if you'd said you wanted to work in journalism, I would definitely encourage you to consider Missouri because of its J School (and excellent career placement in that field) and the academic scholarships you reference of OOS kids.

But since journalism is not your passion, I'd have to agree with the other posters who are down on it generally. Mizzou is not going to help on your resume, given your career goals.

The difference is the University of South Carolina has more OOS students hence yes the population is very different. Also, University of South Carolina has tracks to jobs.

Clearly you understand that getting a job after college is important right??????

You are right you got me I placed the words incorrectly. Wow you are a Genius.

Now OP, please do your homework. You are coming from NY State which has some of the best public education in the country.

Besides looking at Tuition costs, look at the coursework needed to graduate in a major of your choice. Also, look at the career center website and figure out if students get jobs from said University.

SUNYs are not higher ranked than Missouri except Binghamton and Buffalo. I prob wouldn’t get into Binghamton and Buffalo is more for STEM majors. I want to go OOS as stated before so SUNYs aren’t what I’m looking for.

How is Mizzou not going to help on my resume? I thought the old saying was that it’s what you do in college, not where you got your degree from. Also it’s elitist to say certain colleges won’t look good on a resume. It’s not my fault that I don’t have very wealthy parents who can pay for the best school I can get into. Most of us regular people look for finances first when choosing a college, not the ranking or one that would boost a resume.

Well OP why are you going to college? To get good job is the usual response.

If that is the case, unless you are majoring in a easy to transition to a job major ie Engineering, CS, Accounting, Nusing, Missouri is out.

Good luck in your search but if you think SUNY schools are worse than Missouri you need more education. Do more homework on college majors and getting a job.
