Which moisturizer do you pair with retinol?

All of the night creams I was using have active ingredients and they are too much for my skin with the retinol. I’d like to try the sandwich method where you moisturize, apply retinol, then moisturize again. Any recommendations for a basic moisturizer - cream or oil. Thanks!

I use cerave nighttime both day and night. I just put my trentinoin cream on top. This was recommended to me by my derm when I started the trentinoin years ago.

I'm having same issue. Seems like every moisturizer has something that irritates my skin when I'm doing trentinoin

I have very sensitive skin on my face (everything makes my face red as bumpy) and cerave is the only thing I found to work

Cerave makes my skin burn when using retin-A. The AM/PM versions are the worst.

Avene has been my savior. Look into Avene tolerance extreme - no actives, no fragrance, preservatives, or anything irritating at all.

There is a light weight emulsion one and a richer creme version. You can use either or both. I like to put the light one one before retin-A and the rich one on after.

Sometimes I use plain jojoba oil before retin-A and one of the Avene tolerance lotions after.

Ponds crème in the blue jar. Simple and effective I use it with peels etc all the time. Cetaphil moisturizer isn’t rich enough and not as soothing.

Frangrance-free Cetaphil works the best for me. I used to spend $$$ on moisturizers and had to go back to Cetaphil while on a vacation. All my dry, red patches disappeared. I love how easy and cheap it is.

Since starting retinol a few years ago, I've really liked La Roche Posay's Toleraine Double Repair Cream, Too Cool For School's Mellow Egg Cream, and elf's Super Hydrate and Holy Hydration Fragrance Free creams. Right now I'm using Toleraine in the mornings and Holy Hydration at night and as an eye cream.

What really helped me was applying moisturizer around my eyes and under my nose before applying the retinol, giving it a few minutes to absorb and then moisturizing the rest of my face.

I also use Toleraine. It’s a favorite of all the moisturizers I’ve tried.

OP, question for you. Are you waiting at least 5 minutes after you wash your skin to apply the retinol? And then letting the retinol dry completely for 10-15 minutes before you apply moisturizer? I have found most issues are related to this stuff than the moisturizer ingredients.

I'm trying the "sandwich method", so I'm washing my face and moisturizing with a few drops of squalane oil. Then brushing teeth, pjs, etc. so definitely waiting 5 minutes. Then retinol. But last night after I put the retinol on, I put moisturizer on as so as it felt soaked in to the touch. Should I wait longer?

I use Cerave PM but I’m out right now. So I’ve been using hyaluronic acid serum - Paula’s Choice.
