Controlling Weight Gain wbaby #2-Realistic?

Anonymous
So, when I got pregnant with #1, I was already 10lbs over weight (on a 5'9" frame) now I'm 20lbs overweight because I gained an extra 10 that I was too lazy to take off. Now, I'm pregnant again and am HORRIFIED at the thought of getting even fatter after this pregnancy is over. I'm only 5 weeks along, but do you think with diet control and vigirous daily walking I can get away without tagging on another 10? I would like to only gain 20lbs by the end of this pregnancy, since I'm starting off too heavy. I think if I can gain only 20lbs it will be a very manageable number to handle, especially since most that will be baby, blood, and fluids. I know I can't work out too hard now that I'm pregnant and should not focus on weight loss, but it would not be so bad to do a 180 with my eating and exercise habits, right?

I was Really stupid with pregnancy #1 and used it as an excuse to indulge in all my naughty cravings of fast food and sweets. Hopefully this time I can exercise some judgement.

Good thought - bad timing. While I understand when you are just pregnat and want to lose weight...I was at that point when I found out I was pregnant again. Would never consider dieting during pregnancy...just eat healthy and you will gain what you need and little extra pounds. Most OB aree that you can do light to moderate exercise during pregnancy assuming you have been eercising. be cautious of starting an exercise routine at this time. You can, but talk it over with your OB. Good luck and congratulations

My advice would be to give yourself a break on your weight during your pregnancy. You have enough on your plate. You'll have the rest of your life to lose the weight! p.s. But they do say that if you're overweight, it's fine to gain < 25 lbs during pregnancy.

I agree that pregnant women shouldn't obsess about their weight or put pressure on themselves but, as I read your plan, you aren't talking about dieting. You are talking about eating well and doing moderate exercise. That sounds like a great plan to me. (I think, as I sit here with Easter candy.)

When weight issues come up on this board people often say not to worry, and you don't sound like you are in a bad weight range to me, but gaining too much weight during pregnancy can be bad for both the mother and the baby, including increasing the chances of gestational diabetes. Again, this doesn't sound like you but I think we should be honest with ourselves that a pregnant woman can gain too much weight for health purposes.

Thank you OP for your post! I don't have any advice but am in the exact same boat and appreciate reading that I'm not alone. I am newly pregnant with #2 and still had about 10 lbs left to lose from #1, not to mention that I was a bit overweight when I got pregnant with #1! Anyway, thanks, and let's both eat healthy and keep active!
