Thanks for sharing this! I have a fifth grader in 5/6 and a 7th grader in Algebra 1, so was very interested to see recommendations for pathways going forward.

Massive eyeroll. They'll use this as an excuse to hinder acceleration.

I’m having trouble understanding what this means. My son is a 6th grader taking AIM. Next year it will be either Algebra 1 or Grade 7 math even though it states that AIM misses critical pieces of pre algebra even before the pandemic? And how will math placement be determined?

Why not do math 8 this summer since it would include pre-Alg?

Why is the pathway from math 5/6 to AIM highlighted bright red? My son was already identified for AIM 6 based on teacher recommendation so does this mean his assignment for next year may still change?

Your child can still register for course even if not recommended. The easiest way to do this is to take free summer school this summer. Both of my kids are jumping a year in math by taking courses both sessions. 6 weeks to gain a year. We did start one kid tutoring in January to support taking that course, but he was new to MCPS so it was mainly working with his sister’s former teacher an hour a week to learn how to answer things the MCPS way.

I need help understanding this. My kid is at RICA so I realize that it's a bit different. His math curriculum this year was 5/6 Compact. For next year, his teacher told me they're going to put him in Algebra. Is that not what is supposed to be happening? Should he be taking Investigations in Math? Do I need to push back in his upcoming IEP mtg?

He is the only kid using the 5/6 curriculum. I know his teachers moves through the material that he already knows very quickly but I also know that they are only covering modules 1-4 and skipping 5 & 6. I'm wondering if he's going to go into Algebra with gaps that won't be realized until much later.

PP you replied to. Can you clarify a little bit? We could not pick Algebra 1 for our rising 6th grader during course selection months ago. I don't see specific courses listed for our school's summer program or the central office summer program - it just says it will be a mix of math, language and specials that prepare children for next year's courses which would be useless.

Keep it. You're lucky.

The normal accelerated pathway has been 5/6 --> Investigations in Math (IM or, the "Applied IM" AIM class that has some additional extensions) --> Algebra 1. It's been a pretty rare thing for kids to skip from 5/6 directly to Algebra 1. IM/AIM is supposed to cover 7th and 8th grade math topics, and is an accelerated/compressed class.

This is super helpful--why in the world didn't they share this earlier? We have a K kid with whom we certainly could have doubled down on number writing practice; I am sure the same goes for 1st graders and teaching money and time.

So if DC is finishing up 5/6 math, she can go on to AIM in 6th, right?

That is the normal path, and should not change.
