Does anybody know how and where to apply for it? I have a condo in Alexandria and it is now assessed 60K less then when I bought it originally.
TIA. |
| Your property taxes are based off of your assessment. |

I assume you want to sell and can't?

| You should call the county. They have specific rules about how and when you can apply for a change to your property taxes. |

OP here: Of course I would love to sell, but not willing to take such loss. Trying to find out is I at least can pay less in taxes. |
Yes, your taxes will go down. Last time our taxes went up with they had the really high assessment a few years back. Then a few months later they resent the assessment with lower amounts and the taxes went down. |
| Property tax assessment often has little to do with the market price of your house. If you're serious about wanting to sell, talk to a couple of real estate agents to get comps. |

You don't get tax relief unless you quality as elderly or a senior citizen in the City of Alexandria.
As an existing owner, you want your assessment to be low - I'm not sure if you understand that or not. But the lower your assessment, the lower your taxes. The city will set the tax rate later this year, and your tax amount will be computed off that. If you call them and tell them you want to appeal your taxes, they can put that in motion, but it doesn't sound like you know if your property is assessed above the market or not. If you think your property isn't worth the assessed value, you can appeal the assessment. You will need proof of comparable sales to show them, usually within your building. Note that they could potentially raise your value too during this process. If you live in Fairfax County, the process is similar. Both jurisdictions have assessments and sales listed on line under the assessment office if you would like to research this further. Good luck. |

OP here to the PP: So in Alexandria only senior citizens get tax relief? And, yes I understand that as an owner, I want my assessment to be on a lower side.
Thank you for the information! |

Sorry I meant elderly or disabled above. There are also payment plans available, but I'm not thinking its a discount. The City basically thinks that if you can afford to buy a condo, then you can afford to pay taxes on it. If you can't afford the taxes, then you can't afford the mortgage either and should probably call your bank about foreclosure/short sale.

Why, yes. In fact, the entire property owning population from anywhere (all 50 states) should do this. Why not? |
