Where do I start for a 6yo who wants to run track?

We’re in NW DC but I can’t seem to find any where that’s open for track and field.

They’re 6. Have them run up and down an empty sidewalk

For a girl, check out Girls on the Run.

Cool. I'm 53 yo this year and I've been an avid runner since I was 6. Ran competitively in HS and college on a full T&F/X-country scholarship. The Junior Olympics is where I got my start. I'll never forget that experience.

I am in Fairfax County, but I know someone who lives near NW DC whose child runs track and is really good. They are part of some running club. I want to say Seven Locks? I am trying to remember from social media posts.

Look on both the AAU and USATF websites for teams in your area. My son started at 8 with an AAU team, but not in your area. Be careful and selective when choosing a coach.

Bethesda Track Club and Firebirds are both Moco.

most of their curriculum is for much older girls (and the run part is almost incidental to the growth part)

Rockville city has cross country in the fall for young kids and track and field in the spring. My DD started at 7 yo but I believe they start as young as 1st grade. She had a great time.

Bring your 6 year old to a track and let him or her run around or practice sprints or whatever. Practicing staying in one's lane, understanding that the outside of the track is bigger so people start ahead in outside lanes, and standing behind the line while you say "on your mark, get set, go" are all good skills. There is also a good "at home" program at https://runjumpthrow.usatf.org/index.cfm

this would be a long drive from NW but looks good https://www.ccbtfc.club/

And I'd contact DC Speed through DPR to see if they will have a fall season https://www.dcspeedtrackclub.com/teams/?u=DCSPEEDTRACK&s=htosports

At age 6, I personally would just make really sure it’s the kid 100% driving it.

I ran track in HS & college and beat out kids that had already burnt out at that age. I did my laps in soccer, lax, and field hockey before - gym class racing the boys and occasionally impromptu just hopping in on races my dad was doing.
