| What are the odds of Shepherd being pulled out of the Wilson feeder? If a child is entering K next year would that create pause that they wouldn't be grandfathered in or are you all pretty confident Shepherd wouldn't be pulled out? |
|
I don't think anyone knows. The last time they did redistricting the runway was super long for being grandfathered in- I think it is only ending this year and you didn't even have to be at the feeder, just be in bounds. I know that last time the Shepherd community successfully lobbied to stay in partially because Shepherd is IB and is (I think?) the only IB elementary that feeds to Deal so keeping it in is likely.
That plus the diversity of Shepherd and Bancroft are pluses of Shepherd staying in bounds for Deal (keeping Deal/ Wilson diverse is a stated goal of DCPS steering committee). The fact that the mayor and at least one councilperson are in bounds for Shepherd could also help although White seems pretty above board and not super likely to use his position for his own gain. |
| I would say it’s almost a certainty. I have spoken to many people and this seems to be the consensus. Who ultimately knows? |
| I live in Shepherd Park and live the neighborhood. I don’t think it will get redistricted any time soon. But I also don’t have an issue with my kids going to another MS. My oldest attends Walls. |
Sigh. Autocorrect misjudged! I love the neighborhood.
|
You’ve talked to whom? Who are these other people and why do we believe them? |
| Shepherd, Bancroft, and Lafayette are likely to be rerouted, but there will be a long phase-out as with Crestwood. |
Source(s)? |
That's just speculation. There's been no decisions made so nobody can say what the new school patterns will be. |
PP’s source is simply wishing it into existence. However, as a parent at Shepherd, I would love to attend a middle school with Shepherd and Lafayette feeders. The basketball would be dope too! I just don’t think there is enough space at Wells for Lafayette and Shepherd. Too bad they couldn’t make space for a new middle at Walter Reed. |
Why do you speculate it's these three schools? Why not Janney? |
| With the exception of Murch, isn’t Janney the closest ES to Deal? |
|
OP, no one knows. Anyone who claims to know is full of it. But I’ll join the speculation.
I think the only way Shepherd comes out of the Wilson feeder pattern is if Lafayette does, as well, and I think that’s highly unlikely, given that DCPS does not seem to be considering building a new HS in northern Ward 3/4. |
These schools are in Ward 4 - they can go to school at Ward 4 high schools, surely. |
| It is highly unlikely that DCPS is going to remove the highest scoring majority-black elementary school from the best middle and high school feed. The optics and politics would be astoundingly bad. |
