Need a dress for semi formal occasion - anyone been shopping lately?

I am looking for a cocktail length (though could go floor length too) dress for an evening occasion. It needs to be black or navy or sort of a blue/purple. I have the day off tomorrow and can go to the mall, which has Nordstroms, Lord & Taylor and Macy's. Anyone have any other suggestions for me - I'm in MoCo and work in DC.

I would go to Friendship Heights -- you can check out Loehmann's and Filene's if you are feeling adventurous and willing to dig for something fabulous, plus Lord and Taylor and Neiman's are right there too (Sak's is just up a couple of blocks).
