I learned as a young adult and kept it up through grad school. It is good exercise but it is one-sided -- you fence with your dominant hand, and lead with that foot. I guess you could try to switch it up but that's not common. Like most sports, you will want to do general exercise (weights, running) to improve your ability to fence, but it's not necessary to be extremely fit to begin with.
Where are you located that you're near several? I'm looking for a place to take my child who has recently become interested.
