In the past 24 hours we’ve found 2 dead birds in our yard. It’s so gross. There are swarms of cicadas everywhere and those gross cocoons on our deck, and now dead birds? We don’t spray our yard and in 5 years of living in this house we’ve never found a dead animal before. Is anyone else dealing with this? Does it have anything to do with the cicadas?
I feel like I’m in the beginning of a horror movie. |
| Neighbors probably spraying because of the cicadas. |
Something awful is going on No one knows yet. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dead-birds-blind-arlington-dc/2021/05/26/8bac705c-be36-11eb-9c90-731aff7d9a0d_story.html

It's not just your yard. It's happening here in Alexandria, too.
Birds are dropping dead in Arlington and DC region prompting an investigation into cause https://www.fox5dc.com/news/birds-are-dropping-dead-in-arlington-and-dc-region-prompting-an-investigation-into-cause |
| People are spraying like crazy, every day feels like I'm choking on mosquito spray. Insects are bird food and if they die of poisoning so will the birds, frogs... |
|
I skimmed the WashPost article. If I were to take a sad guess, it would be that the cicada poisons are poisoning the birds too.
Are we fricking stupid, or what?! When are people going to learn you poison the critters, you poison your environment, and ultimately you poison yourself too. |
I thought about that, but realistically some people spray every year. We have never had dead birds before. |
They won’t. Just like the anti-vaxers. They either think ‘won’t impact me’ or ‘the risk is so small, I’m fine taking it’. |
This is so scary! I’m the OP and I’m in Rockville, Maryland! This is really disturbing. |
Thank you for sharing this! Now I REALLY feel like I’m the beginning of a horror movie. |
| People need to stop spraying pesticides for the cicadas. |
|
Your fellow neighbors are poisoning them.
Spraying enormous amounts of insecticide in their yards, on trees, in water and the food they're eating is absorbing the poison and killing them. The insecticide doesn't even work on cicadas. Nice touch NIMBYs. |
others have said it, but it needs repeating... people are selfishly spraying and ruining our world. God forbid they have a few mosquitoes or cicadas.
|
| It's probably not the sprays (which are bad!), it's some neurological thing or a bacteria or something. But also, two dead birds might just mean an enterprising cat or just chance. It's fledgling season, a lot of them just die. They're bad at flying and finding food. Be grateful for the scavengers who clear many of them away before we find them. |
| I am so upset to hear this. I hope our wildlife experts can figure out what is going on. |
