Help with bottles!!!

There are so many choices for bottles. How do I decide which one to use for a newborn? Playtex? Advent? Dr. Browns? What nipple size? And, what is the deal with the problems with plastic I have heard about? Any advice at all would be very very much appreciated. Thanks.

I too felt the same, although I didn't hear about the plastic/BPA issues until after my DD was born. There are a few types that are BPA free, the big ones I know about are born free ( sold at whole foods and I think babies r us but they sell out quickly) and Medela ( sold almost all baby stores, including target). We used the Medela ones, because of the BPA and also I had a Medela pump so they fit right on and I could pump directly into the bottle. So you may want to check what types fit on your pump if you are using one. Another thing to consider is the number of parts they have...which can get to be a pain in the butt when you are cleaning them and trying to get a bottle together quickly at 2am! The born free and dr. brown's have more parts, whereas the avent, medela only have the bottle, nipple, and cap. Hope that helps some! Congrats on the babe!

A larger nipple is good if you plan on breastfeeding - helps with promoting latching. We tried the Avent nipple on the Avent VIA system. It is a disposable system, but we have had no problem reusing the bases over and over. They are a little tricky to get bases on the tops, but it only takes a couple of times to figure it out. This is a different base than the normal Avent bottle (which has BPA).

We used the playtex disposables. We tried so many bottles-Dr. Brown were hard to clean, I could smell sour milk even though we used the little stick cleaner for the tubing. We wanted something that we could get the excess air out of the bottle and the playtex bottles worked great.

Check out this website--they test and rate available BPA free bottles.

Medela are great, however they do not come larger than 5 oz. It may seem like your baby will never need that much, but the day will come!

It is hard to switch a baby over from a Medela bottle with a small nipple to a Born Free bottle with a large nipple. If you think you will use Born Free later on (because it is BPA free), I would start with it. If you are going to do the drop-in disposable kind of bottle, then just use those nipples in the Medela bottle to start with.

Dr. Brown's are not BPA free, have a ton of extra parts to clean and just aren't worth it!
