How much is too much?

DC is in PK (full day until 3:00 PM) and typically has 2 afternoons with some enrichment activities (music, dance). Is it too much to sign up for one more activity?

Yes.

It depends on the kid. Unstructured play is extremely important, however, so it is easy to sign up for too much.

My 4 yr old would be dead with the full day pre-K alone but you know your child. But I do think that less is more at that age. Give your DC some down time.

Is the activity something DC really wants to do? Or is it something you think DC should do, like Suzuki violin (OK, my DC did that in K, but just an example).

The music class is a group lesson and is not too demanding; the second class is ballet. DC loves both activities; as for the third it would be a language class. We speak French home but DC has always been in daycare/preschool and her first language is English. She doesn't want to speak French and even prefers not to watch a movie if it is not in English...

Is your child napping during PK? I noticed when my oldest went to a full academic day and no longer had naptime, she started falling asleep in the car around that 5:30pm timeframe and tended to fall asleep by 8:30pm - before her younger sister that naps. I normally like to limit the kids to two activities - one during the school week and one on the weekend.

Also, do you pick up at 3:00pm everyday or only the day there is an activity? I know the kid like the free play/playground time they have in aftercare. I don't think it would be a big deal having one day they have a lesson intead of playground time. I'm not sure if it is a choice between relaxing at home - maybe watching shows or language lesson or playground aftercare at school or language lessons.

I think French class is too much, and 3 activities a week for a pre-K kid to me sounds way overscheduled, even if she is compliant enough and willing enough to handle it. I would just play games with her, etc., to reinforce French at home. How about just play dates with other kids some afternoons?

Or how about switching off with activities? One session of ballet and then after it ends, try a session of French. Then let your child choose what she wants to continue with. 3 after-school activities for a pre-K student who is in school all day is overkill.

Thank you for the advice. We will wait and put her in a language summer camp.

If you aren't going to do the heavy lifting of forcing French at home, it isn't going to matter what classes or schools you send her to.

I don't agree about switching out of ballet if she likes it. Running around is good. If anything, drop the music.
