No, I'm not going to buy one. But I saw a thing about a guy who was pulled over after being followed by cops for 2 miles with their lights and sirens going while he was sound asleep. Honestly, I don't think I cold handle staying alert and hands on wheel "driving" one of those things. It would be like riding in an airplane with a pretend control panel and stick attached to the seat ahead of you. I guess maybe with an audiobook I could do it if I was driving alone.
Interesting that the Tesla didn't have the ability to figure out the cops were trying to pull it over, with all those sensors. |

I had a debate about this with a friend. His claim is that the "driver assistance" features (they are NOT "autonomous cars" in the sense that has been promised for years) will make the driver MORE focused because they make a driver have to do fewer tasks that require mental energy.
I call BS on that claim. Once the car starts taking care of things for you, your mind drifts to other things, whether it's signs out the window, singing along to Journey, or dozing off. I think that all of the sensors and technologies and everything are impressive but that the leap to "autonomy" is going to be way more difficult than its advocates think. |
| I like “dumb” cars. Because I’m a driver. |
Oh, so you're saying that you must use the self driving features in those cars? |
| I enjoy driving. It’s the first time I’ve understood gun nuts. Because autonomous cars will save lives, and I’m like, meh. |
Insurers love autonomous cars because it will greatly reduce traffic accidents and fatalities. They will jack up the price on insuring cars that require driving. They will financially incentivize the move toward autonomous driving. |

I can't wait. I have driving anxiety, particularly over bridges, and these cars would enable me to actually drive myself most places.
And, they will be a boon to the 70+ set. |
| It'll be 20 or 30 years. |
Hope not. Maybe 5 years? 5G is not implemented well in the USA. It’ll be great if cars can “talk” to each other. Elon keeps lying... it’s a race between Lidar and a lot of cameras for now. |
| Wait until some Russian hacker group takes control of your car and won’t let you unlock the door until you pay in Bitcoin. |
Your friend is wrong. This is a well-documented phenomenon. |
