There was once a time when the sitting president believed that the Justice Department should operate with complete independence from the Presidency. Those days are now clearly over. And perhaps previous presidents can be criticized for nominating weak DOJ leadership (although those standards were light years above the current ones), but an argument can also be made that with until active appeals were complete, the files needed to be held back from public disclosure.

“An argument can also be made?” It’s not an argument, it’s reality. They followed the law and left the files sealed while Maxwell’s appeals were going through the courts. It’s not theory. It’s fact.

I would be willing to bet that by this time next year, the global public will have a pretty good idea how wide and deep this all goes.

The question is if people inside the US will be held accountable. So far, the answer is no.
