| Thoughts? What’s the school like? What kind of kid goes there? |
|
Solid school, attracts a more liberal student, small classes.
Don't listen to the naysayers who put it down. |
| UMW is a great school. Strong community feel, down to earth students, smaller classes, and a beautiful campus that reminds me of a smaller UVA campus. |
| What’s the feel of the school like? |
Disagree. Did you mean a liberal arts student? Many kids from conservative families in Virginia. |
Do you realize that not everyone has the same political views as their parents? The vast majority of young adults and therefore the vast majority of college campuses lean left. Regardless, UMW has a lot to offer, and attracts similar minded students as WM who aren’t looking for a party focused school. |
| Does anyone have a view on UMW vs CNU? |
Here's a thread https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/854797.page |
I would say that those who like UVA would like CNU and those who like WM would like UMW |
Yes 100+++ |
Ditto. My DD is only planning to apply to W&M (reach) and UMW (safety) for in-state options. And otherwise applying to LACs. |
I did this 20 years ago and went to Mary Washington. It was a good fit for me! |
|
I'm a UMW parent to a rising sophomore.
UMW has been a good fit for my kid. I am not originally from this area so the discussions on the VA schools are always so interesting. Every so often I find folks at work who are UMW alums and all of them have good things to say about their experience. |
| Back in the day UMW would be grouped right below UVA, William & Mary and VT. Now it's a lower tier. It's a fine school, though -- just hasn't been keeping pace. |
| My husband went there. It's progressive, no recognized fraternities as a matter of policy, is coed but started off as an all women's school so that's where some of the progressiveness comes from. Husband really enjoyed the school, only has good things to say about it. |
