hi everyone,
Single Mom with two kids. Need to upgrade smaller car to an SUV. Budget is an issue. Might consider good used SUV, or new, not sure. Which one would you recommend? Nissan Rogue? Ford? Subaru? Kia? Hyundai? Also, where should I look for this? Dealers? Carmax? Thanks! |
| Why do you need an suv? Suvs are a lot more expensive than their sedan counterparts. Definitely do not get a Nissan. The are awful. I also wouldn’t get used right now. Used prices are higher than new! I would probably go with a Ford Edge. Toyota and Honda have bumped up their prices and quality is way down. Get whatever you can get with 0% interest. |
| What's your budget? |
| OP here - I have two kids, so SUV would be best for us right now. Our current Nissan is very small for the three of us. Even going to Costco and transporting toilet paper is an issue. Are Fords good now? How about Subarus? |
Subarus are expensive for what they are, and they really don’t have a small suv. Ford is a lot better than it used to be. Toyota is worse, and they use CVT transmissions. Od probably try for a new Hyundai Tucson. |
| What about Mazda cx 5? |
| My last three cars have been Hyundais and all have been good cars. My current is a Kona - it's a crossover/compact SUV, but I find the backseat leg space to be limited (we rarely have riders and wanted it to haul larger things but didn't want a full sized SUV). My other two were sedans so I can't speak to the next size up (the Tucson) directly, but the brand has always been solid for me. |
| I love my Hyundai Santa Fe. Eleven years and no issues, going strong. |
| OP here - will look into Hyundai and Ford too. I would not want to spend more thank $ 20K. I want big enough space in the trunk/ back seats to haul furniture etc. |
| OP - we rented a Ford Escape last year and really liked it. Considering that too. |
| Get a used Honda CRV |
| I'm still driving my 2013 escape and it's had no issues the whole time i've had it. Approaching 100k miles without any major $$$. I bought the base model. |
We love ours for our three boys. |
|
I had a Toyota Rav 4 with no issues for many years.
With a 20k budget, I'd go to Carmax and try out all the ones that fit the budget and pick my favorite. |

Do NOT get the Nissan Rogue unless it has a regular (non-CVT) transmission.
Signed, Mom of 2 on a budget whose 7-year-old Nissan SUV needs its second $5k transmission |
