RE with a progressive approach?

Anonymous
Can anyone recommend a RE with a progressive approach? Dr. Osborn at Shady Grove diagnosed me with unexplained secondary infertility (I have a 2 yr old) and suggested IUI & then IVF. Before I try IUI, I'd like to try some less invasive -- and less expensive -- treatments for a short luteal phase. Dr. Osborn was very dismissive of anything but IUI & IVF, which my insurance does not cover.

How old are you? And how long have you been ttc #2? If you are AMA or have been ttc #2 for a good period of time, then I think most REs will suggest IUI or IVF to increase your odds. If you are just looking to have your short LP addressed, then your OB-GYN can prescribe progesterone suppositories.

I saw 3 RE's (Dr Frankurter, Dr Widra and Dr DiMattina) with a dx of unexplained and mentioned to all of them that I have a short luteal phase (10 days) -- none of them cared. Dr Frankurter basically said, it's a chicken/egg thing -- if you ever got pregnant your luteal phase would be longer.

Sorry... you could try herbs/accupuncture on your own. But otherwise there aren't that many tools in an RE's toolkit other than IUI and IVF.

I agree that there really isn't much technology that REs can employ to address a short luteal phase, other than progesterone (which doesn't make them any money). You could try Dr Sacks at Columbia Fertility Associates in DC. He might be willing to do monitored natural cycles with progesterone supplementation in the luteal phase.

Have you tried taking B6 and/or using atural progesterone cream to try to lengthen your LP? Might be worth trying for a cycle or 2 to see if it makes any difference.

sorry, meant natural, not atural!

I was fortunate to get my first BFP after 5 IUI and 1 IVF, but in the back of my mind, if the IVF's didn't work out, I was going to try natural cycle IVF along with working with a traditional chinese medicine practitioner/acupuncturist that specialized in fertility.

This whole journey has made me understand how much diet and stress can play a role.

Good luck!

If you are up for a trip to NYC, you could see Dr Raymond Chang for a consult. He's an MD and an expert on east/west medicine and fertility and conducts research with the IVF team at Cornell. It's about $350 for a consult.
