Ds is turning 3 and wants a dump truck birthday party. I’m super pregnant and will be 39 weeks on his birthday so I don’t think I have it in me to run a party. He’s also not begging for a friends party the way my oldest always has. It will be our family plus 4 grandparents. Any ideas for an excursion that would be fun around northern va or maybe DC? I can’t go far because I can’t travel far from my hospital.
Or maybe an activity at home around dump trucks that grandparents would like too? |
Excursion? He’s 3. Take him to a construction site with cranes & dump trucks. Park your car and let him watch for an hour. He will love it.
Have cake and presents from the grandparents at home. Done. |
Maybe Diggerland in NJ? Have his dad take him, you wait at home with cake, |
Either visit a construction site, or if he loves fire trucks, call your neighborhood fire station and ask if you can stop by fairly early the morning of his birthday when they're likely not to be too busy.
Order a cake with construction trucks or a fire truck. He'll be too small to do much at Diggerland, but that was so much fun when DS was 7. |
Drive around DCA, the land of a billion construction projects, and then have a picnic at gravely point where he can run around, you can sit, and airplanes can entertain. |
Op here. Well there are 4 non local grandparents flying in and driving here, so I’d like an activity to do with everyone. And yes, 3 year olds do enjoy themselves and like parties. I try to make things special. |
You are ridiculous.
Buy some Tonka trucks, throw some sand down on the lawn/deck and let the grandparents play with kid who won't remember this birthday. Maybe not Insta perfect but you will survive. |
You are rude. She wants her child to have a nice birthday after a year of isolation and before a new baby arrives. Save your “ridiculous” for the mother who wants to buy their kid a dump truck OR just ignore threads where people caring for their children trigger you. |
I think a sand box with trucks, maybe even one of those ride on ones he can fill up, is your best bet. As for excursions, driving down 66 is an endless parade of construction vehicles. My almost 3 yo counts excavators every morning and loves it. |
If you’re up for a bit of a drive, I would totally go to the B&O Railroad Museum. The whole family will enjoy it. Another possibility is the Udvar-Hazy Museum in Virginia.
Have a fun birthday! |
Sandbox or just digging in the dirt with toy trucks is huge with my kid. Digging in general, really.
The Udvar Hazy suggestion is a pretty good idea as most kids who love trucks love vehicles in general. Are boats or planes fun too? You could go to Gravelly Point and watch the planes land. |
Zoo is opening soon with an appointment |
Sanbox with dump trucks. It will give the grandparents more time to interact, too. |
Bravo! I’m so sick ppl asking for recs to make something special/nice and ppl call them ridiculous or similar. OP can clearly image the basic answer to the question and I’m sure the kid owns truck toys; she wants to make the party special and that is OK!! |
Go to the dump in Rockville. Seriously. https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/sws/dropoff/
We go there often to get rid of stuff, but I'm always in awe. They have all types of cool machinery, including dump trucks. There is an ENORMOUS building where you can dump large (or small) objects over the edge and there are dump trucks driving around down there moving stuff around. After that, head to Woodley Gardens Park nearby where they have a great playground, a creek to play in, and Carmen's ice cream. |
