| DD (13 years old) is fairly athletic, but new to volleyball. She wants to give it a try, but we have no idea where to start. Can someone recommend some class or club or whatever? We are in Bethesda/Rockville/Gaithersburg area. Thanks. |
| It's too late now but Gaithersburg has a rec volleyball league for beginners. They'll most likely have it again in the fall. |

I don't know if the PP was referring to the same program, but Montgomery Village has all levels of VB:

| Sign up for camps and clinics - they are just around the corner with some starting clinics in next couple weeks. Many clubs in that corridor and some in NoVA if you want to drive. MVSA, MoCo VB, MEVC, Metro North, Frederick... a few may have summer leagues (but harder to find as clubs are still finding their way out of the pandemic and options to play). |

Virginia Elite in McLean VA has very good beginners clinics. MVSA league is inexpensive and great place to get playing time but if she is new and wants to get good fundamental training, it is not the place to go. Columbia Volleyball Academy also has good training but a bit far.
MoCo VBC is relatively new but not a bad place to start - Coach Cornejo is good at teaching the fundamentals and they also have a club team (no super competitive but good place to start if kid wants more) No experience with MEVC but have heard good reviews of their training. If DD (at 13) is tall (at least 5-8 or 5-9) - then any club will be willing to train you If DD (at 13) is not tall, then she is a bit behind already (many girls have been playing since they were 8 or 9 yo) so she will need to play catch up |
Agree - try to find as many camps and clinics that are still available as possible - most just started this past week. For your MD corridor, you may still find availability with the Frederick, Metro North (check metrovbc.com website for their summer offerings and ones up that way for availability. Once fall starts, some places have fall league that then lead up to travel if that is a route your DD wants to go. Agree with PP re: height variations at this age. Tall and/or on the way to tall will get attention at this age as clubs will say they can train her. If shorter, harder to get a foot hold but doable at some of the smaller clubs or those clubs with multiple teams for a given age group. Maybe this next year, some more clubs will return to that. Don't wait too long into the fall because there will be a dry spell of vball offerings until the spring rec leagues. A few areas will have fall rec league but fewer and far between as most places will turn to travel vball for their gyms and resources. Don't wait until she is 14, will get harder for entry unless she is super athletic (and tall). |

Here is some info on club volleyball in Northern Virginia.
https://www.novavolleyballalliance.org/clubguide Many of the clubs will have camps and clinics. Some of the schools will as well. My daughter’s middle school has a camp going on this week. As others have said, if your daughter is tall that will be a huge advantage. However, my short daughter started playing the spring of her 8th grade year and found a club team and plays on her high school team. It isn’t easy being a short girl playing volleyball but it’s possible. |

I threw away the flyer but there is a volleyball "club" being offered during the weekends at King Farm Park. Price is minimal. No long term commitment.
Now if only I could remember the name... |
Me again! I found it - https://www.bearsvc.com/ |
