Run at night in DC?

Anonymous
Hi, I live in Logan Circle DC and have a 1.5 DD. I miss running a lot but being full time working mom its hard to squeeze in. Now that its warming up i am thinking of running after DD goes down to bed (like 8:30). If I stick to main roads do you think it is safe to run at night? I figure in the city there are people out. Should I not wear head phoens??? I Know its safer w/o them but so hard to stick with the run. Maybe i should just stick with the gym....

You shouldn't wear headphones, even during the day if you're going to run in the streets. I would think that if you stayed on busy streets it would be safe to run at night. I certainly would walk at night around Logan Circle but not with headphones (mugger magnets) and certainly being carefully observant of my surroundings.

Try it once and see what you think.

agree about the no headphones. no way.

honestly, i don't know. everyone has a bad story to tell, but a male colleague of mine was pulled into an alley and mugged at 14th and Corcoran (ish) during the day last year....

I have run at night in DC for years--like 15 years, on and off. I don't wear headphones anymore and I have lived in Glover Park, Palisades, Chevy Chase, DuPont/Kalorama. I would not run in the Logan Circle area, Columbia Heights, U Street, etc. Stick to more suburban areas of DC or main drags like Mass Ave or Connecticut Ave.

Be very careful with those large vehicles like metro buses and tractor trailers. A jogger died after being hit by a tractor trailer on 14th & Constitution early last? Saturday morning. Though she was wearing earphones. Wear reflective clothing, obey traffic signals and don't jump the gun entering a crosswalk before making sure last minutes speeders aren't changing lanes while trying to beat the light.

I live in your neighborhood (15th and R) and I'd be careful much past 8pm. Parts of Logan can be kind of sketchy at night and crime is highish in certain areas. That said, I think a run that is mainly down 14th street into the business/downtown part of DC and back would probably be fine. I just wouldn't go into the residential parts east of 14th.

also, absolutely leave the headphones at home on a night run.

Give it a go one night and trust your gut...if it feels unsafe, it probably is.

If you stick to 14th street, you'll be just fine. Headphones are not a big deal as long as you keep the volume down low enough to hear what is going on around you.

Please carry ID with you as well. I heard the woman who was hit on 14th last week wasn't carrying any. I used to run with my large dog, which was also a plus.

thanks for the words of advice. My plan is to wait until it is lighter later and agree the headphones dangerous. Do any of you run early in am (like 6am?) I almost feel as though this is a less safe time-less people out right??

ID can be stolen. I would tattoo my SSN on my thigh. Better safe than sorry.

Can you run with a friend or two? That's what I do, in G'town.

I would run, but absolutely not wear headphones.

Can you head west on P towards Dupont/Georgetown? That might be your most populated and safest route.

Two words about headphones and exercising in the dark: David Rosenbaum.

Clubbed over the head in one of the safest parts of town during a walk, and never heard his assailants coming.

Is there any other time during the day that you can run. Can you run at lunchtime near your job? Can you run on a treadmill at home? Or could you do some type of workout tape at home during the week and then run on the weekends in a safer place? If you are going to run in that part of town and that late, can you find a buddy to go with you?
