I have been playing with soil mixes DIY to get the best mixes for outdoor container gardening with budget. This is for vegetable gardening which has tomato, eggplant, lettuce, corn, sweet pepper, chili pepper, herbs , cucumber, and some green vegetables.
So far, I have been mixing 1/4 peat moss, 1/4 garden soil, 1/4 compost and 1/4 potting mixes. And, I also add some garden lime pellet (to neutralize peat moss ph level) plus some pellet fertilizers. I have some 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 garden soil, 1/3 compost, then I add more garden lime pellet (to neutralize peat moss ph level) plus more pellet fertilizers. They are now all seeds and baby seedlings planted outdoors in big containers. Am I doing it right? For the next few months, all I need to do is add pellet fertilizers and some eggshell, right? |
| I am confused if I should use more compost or use more pellet vegetable fertilizers? |
| I use the potting mix sold at Costco for all my containers. I also reuse them for years, just topping up the containers as needed. For fertilizer I add Osmocote twice a season, and will throw in some alfalfa, a bit of lime, oyster shell flour and kelp meal. Tomatoes, eggplants and peppers do fine. |
