My 14u son’s travel team is disbanding during the summer and he’ll need a new team. He goes to a small independent school where he can play in the Spring but there is no affiliated travel or rec team for summer and fall. Does anyone have any suggestions for where to look? He is an excellent pitcher, decent hitter, and he’d like to play in college. I am a little wigged out by the whole showcase/prospect team thing for a 9th grader - it seems early to be putting pressure on kids to perform for college chances. But if that is the only way my son can play competitive baseball he’ll want to do it.
We are in Maryland, and anything in Rockville, Olney, Columbia, Silver Spring, Burtonsville, or Laurel would work. Bethesda and Potomac get to be too much driving on week nights. I am having no luck finding a travel team that goes past 14u based in any of those towns. I know of BABL, BCC Prospects, and Koa. All are right on the edge of too far to drive for us. Looking to try out for fall ball. Any and all suggestions welcome! |
| Take a look at Dig In Baseball. They are out of Gaithersburg. |

West Howard County Renegades is in Columbia. See https://sites.google.com/view/whc-renegades-baseball/home
We played this team several times and they were pretty good. |
| Thanks! Those look like good options. Anyone else with suggestions? |
| IMG, DC Dynasty, Outlaws, Bradley, Stars, Canes all may have something that could work. I know it seems crazy at this age, but it is time to look for the best team, not the most convenient option, if he has a real goal of playing in college. |
+1 DC Dynasty mom |
| Is it too late to try out for DC Dynasty's summer league? I emailed them but never heard back... |
Yes. You can try for fall. |

Depends on talent and interest. Things get pretty serious on some of those teams. Take a look at BCC too.

| DC Dynaaty is a great organization with excellent coaching. They don’t charge exorbitant fees for uniforms and extra frills like other teams. I would definitely give the owner a call- the number listed on the website, as email correspondence is not always the best way to go with them. |
If the kid is good enough they will make room. Call again and ask for a private tryout, OP |
Just to be clear, the one asking for Summer DC Dynasty wasn't OP (me). It looks like a good program, but there is no way I can get my kid there through rush hour traffic after work. So still looking! I'm finding that not all teams have posted tryout dates for fall ball. Those that do seems to have tryouts late July and early August. Does that sound right? |
Sorry for the mixup! In our experience the teams will have published tryout dates, as well as appointment tryouts throughout the year. Teams are always looking for kids who can pitch or hit. So if there is a program you think would work logistically, give them a call even if the tryouts aren’t technically until later. Often a player guest plays at a tournament or something before joining the next season. And it really is important to note that in high school the emphasis for many tournament or showcase teams is not location...so don’t be dissuaded by location if they don’t have regular weekly practices! Many competitive teams have kids from all over the dmv who come together mostly for tournaments. Good luck finding someplace that works! |
