APS- 95% in person for the fall

Anonymous
The school board meeting board docs have been posted that include the results from the survey for instructional model for the fall. Looks like virtual classes will be quite small across the county.

As it should be

Not surprised at all.

Though I really thought it would be more like 98% going in person.

Not surprised.

Even the nuttiest nutters I know are sending kids back.

Wasn't APS predicting at one point that there would be 29,000+ students in school buildings? Maybe that was pre-Covid?

Wonder what, if anything, the new numbers mean for APS as a school system.

Makes sense. Glad APS can't dodge this anymore and claim people were happier with virtual.

I am concerned about APS claiming that 2,000 students who left APS this year aren't coming back. I don't doubt that many aren't returning but I don't trust APS's numbers at all. I know people who left APS this year (private, homeschool) and were never contacted by the school to ask about their plans for next year. I'm highly skeptical of where they are getting that number from.

I hope APS doesn't cut a bunch of teacher positions on this assumption just to be surprised in August when people re-enroll.

My concern is that, since their kids are back, those folks will push for unreasonable measures that are inconsistent with APS providing actual education.

My guess is the numbers don't include new K and preK kids, or kids who are going to re-enroll after leaving APS this year.

It does highlight the disparity along racial lines. Some important information there to figure out what if anything APS can do to help minority families feel safer about sending their children back in-person.

I am really curious to see how this is broken down by school. Given the numbers for race and economically disadvantage I imagine the families that pick virtual are more concentrated in S. Arlington.

I also found it fascinating that the majority reason for picking virtual was health and safety and NOT waiting for a vaccine which gives me concern that 1) folks are not planning on being vaccinated or 2) that we aren't reaching groups regarding the effectiveness of the vaccines.

Finally, has APS committed to keeping virtual school all year. What happens if after the first quarter or semester only a handful of children remain. Will they combine grade levels? Will teachers be teaching to 1-2 students.

Also would love to know the current grade breakdown for ES picks.

Freaking idiots. The most blatant writing on the wall ever. They are literally without excuse (and have been) and should be compelled by this data to at the very least try to move elementary to in person for the remainder of this year. Every day counts!

I’m also curious to see the breakdown by school. I think they will publish that data eventually.

"unreasonable measures?"

What do you consider unreasonable?
