What gift cards are preferred as gifts?

Anonymous
I have several gifts to give this week. 2 preschool teachers (age 50), 2 elementary (age ~30) and a 10yo boy. I feel it is so hard to know what people want lately so I often just give gift cards.

Is Amazon the way to go? I used to do target for everyone but these days people seem to buy everything online.

Do teachers still like Starbucks? DH thinks I should give the teachers Starbucks and the kid an Amazon gift card.

I know my preschool child likes any gift but my upper elementary boys are now picky and don’t even play with toys.

I did Amazon since I know I can always find something there myself my kids like Amazon too, and sometimes if they get a gift card to there and can’t find anything they want, they “sell” it to me for cash 😂

Target is on line too. It offers people who do not have prime the option of shopping in person to avoid shipping. My kids prefer to go to a store but with Covid some families might not want to.

Visa or Mastercard guft card. Recipient can use where they want.

NP. I refuse to buy these out of principle because of the service charge they add to the purchase price.

nP. I have not had this happen when received as a gift. I believe it is extra on the purchaser when the card is purchased. I would still not use Amazon-which is a lot of junk and fake products-aside from their labor and ethics issues. I would get it to somewhere small and local to them that they like such as a coffee, ice cream or book shop and also throw in an extra generic gift card for whatever to Target.

I like to give experience gifts to kids as much as possible, like a year pass or day admission tickets (not date restricted) after clearing it with the parents. It depends on how close you are with them though.

I'd do Amazon for the teachers, so they can use it for either personal or classroom needs. Barnes & Noble is another good option, for the same reason.

For the boy, I'd do Target. He could order online if the family aren't doing in-store shopping. They have tons of stuff for kids that age: games, Legos, books, video games, backyard toys, even pop-culture collectibles like Funko Pops or Marvel merchandise like Avengers t-shirts, if he's into that.

I love the idea of something local and personal, but unless you know a person well, it's hard to find something you know they'll use. But hey, at least the small business still gets the money whether they use it or not!

Gift cards to local places like bakeries, bagel stores, cofffee shop, ice cream place.

Plus they aren't like regular gift cards where you can just whatever's left on the card and then pay for the rest with another method. There has to be enough on the card to cover the whole transaction, which means a lot of cards get thrown away with a dollar or two on them (all part of the plan, I'm sure).

is this true, so if I have $10 left on the card I can’t buy something for $20 and put the rest on a credit card or cash? I just got a Visa gift card from my MIL so haven’t dealt with this before.

Amazon and Target.

I too hate those visa gift cards. If you get a $50 visa gift card, you have to make sure your purchase is over $50, because otherwise you have to remember the exact amount on the card and ask the cashier to take $2.40 off this card and put the remainder on a different card. Annoying

I basically only do Amazon these days. I'm lazy and I can print one out at the last minute or just email it directly to them.

I think gift cards to local stores and restaurants are the way to go. Local places need more love after this past year and a gift card from them seems more like a gift. Target and Amazon gift cards are so commonplace, no one really remembers who gave them one of those cards when they spend them.
