Do I have to return plates for leased car to DMV?

My lease is over I turned over the car . I logged in my dmv account to remove the car it’s no longer there , I then tried to surrender my plate option it’s says you can not do it for leased car ?
Do I really have to go DMV to drop off the plate ? Called dealership they told me call DMV ? Right... have been on hold forever gave up |

OP here ,
Hmm I put in home improvement lol. They do not have drop off box . I just went there had to fill out paperwork and hand the plate . No proof that I returned it ? At least there was no line I managed to do it right be the entrance . |

| If it's leased you shuoldn't. The leasing company owns it. |
