Gift ideas for son's girlfriend's college graduation

Anonymous
My son's girlfriend is graduating from their college this month (my son is a year behind) and I'm trying to come up with a thoughtful gift for her. It's pretty serious, so she could be with our family long term. She's a lovely girl but I don't know her really well.

We are taking them on a trip right after graduation, but I'd like something tangible to give her. Any ideas?

My mom always gave luggage. Is there a nice carry on luggage that she'd like?

OP here -- I was actually just on the Tumi website looking at luggage. We got our first piece of Tumi when we got married and used it for our honeymoon. God I loved that suitcase!

I think that's a really good idea! Personal but not stepping on toes of parents or son with something too personal. Maybe a nice travel tote or backpack? Tumi makes really nice bags.

Np I would want to choose my own luggage so I wouldnt want that as a gift. Instead a nice dinner out with my boyfriend would be a treat. Have your son get something more romantic.

My college boyfriend's mom gave me a pretty pendant necklace for graduation. (We did get married, and I still smile when seeing it in my jewelry box.)

Necklace or earrings. No luggage.

A gold necklace with a charm that has the engraved longitudinal/latitudinal coordinates of her college. You can figure out the coordinates on google maps.

This is very sweet of you. My now MIL gave me pearl studs earrings from Tiffany. I have sons so I'll pass them along to DS1's SO when it's time.

I am giving a nice Valentino shoulder bag to one who has been living w us. Another son who just started dating - giving her a tote bag

OP here -- It's a bit tricky because we a lot wealthier than her family (she's the first one to go to college, on a full scholarship) and I don't want to get her something over-the-top that would be nicer than what her parents get her. So the Tumi may have to wait.

Do 20 year olds still wear pearl earrings to work? I could do that -- but I wouldn't get them at Tiffany's.

What is your budget, OP?

Also, what field of work is she going into? Would something like a leather file folder or gift certificate for a nice office bag the appropriate?

My MIL gave me some nice earrings, my sister's MIL took her shopping and bought her a beautiful classic suit. Ask your son what she would like?
