We are considering moving our son from Whitman to a private school for 10th grade. We're told he may be at a disadvantage because the depth of instruction, homework types and expectations are going to be very different from MCPS, and that he may struggle trying to make a switch. Obviously, given looming college admissions, we don't want to risk this unless were comfortable he can be as academically successful in private. Anyone out there who has done this and can comment? |
Hard to say without knowing what school you are looking at moving him to. The schools really do have different "feels" once you are at the HS level. Are you willing to share which school(s) you are thinking of? |
If college is your concern, don't move him - you are risking way too much!
Colleges could give a hoot where you went to HS. They care about your grades, SAT/ACT and extra-curs. |

My child moved to a top private school after Pyle. It has worked out incredibly well. Your son will be very well prepared coming from Whitman. The level of homework increased some--but I think that had more to do with the move to high school rather than to a private school. Academically, the change was no problem at all. If he wants to move and it seems like a good fit--do it with confidence. |
Good to hear. But my son has a mild learning disability and struggles in writing and analysis in some subjects. He's bright, but I want to be sure he can handle it. Anyone else with experience making this kind of move? |
