Gunston Travel?

Anonymous
We're new to the Mount Vernon area and looking for a travel program for our 15y/o daughter. We came from a solid program in MN and I was looking at Gunston as an option because it's nearby. The travel program seems to disappear after u15. Does anyone have thoughts about the quality of the club or recommendations for other clubs in southern Fairfax County?

In this area, I’d suggest going to tryouts and looking for a team at Gunston, Lee-Mt Vernon, and Alexandria. Different sizes & styles. You can see which would work best for her.

I would add SYC to the list if its in driving distance. They seem to be taking off and have depth in many of the age groups.

Gunston is a very sketchy club. They will back out of games they can’t win pulling the covid protocols card... I know because they did it to my DD’s team. And miraculously that same team was ready the following weekend for a tournament.

Obviously we reported them to the tourney directors and they kicked them out.

Covid quarantine has a set time limit. All responsible teams were canceling games this fall

Gunston is a small local club. They do not have a lot of strong teams and have to compete for players with much larger clubs in LMVSC and SYC. They occasionally have some pretty good teams but not consistently. Since all of the local clubs can be inconsistent from age group to age group best thing would probably be to check out all of the ones close to you--Alexandria, SYC, LMSC, and Gunston should all be in close driving distance to give you a good start.

For the girls side, I would give them a serious look. The president and vice president of the club coach older the older girls. If you want higher level travel, look at SYC for that area. I'd avoid LMVSC

Wow nobody recommending Arlington?

Is your daughter a 2005 or 2006? For a 2005 LMVSC would be okay. For a 2006, they are forming a new team because they lost their team due to some between-clubs drama so the team would be new and would be fine for someone that’s a decent player, but not for a very strong player.

Also there is an ID session tonight for 2006 girls. Of the clubs mention, LMVSC is the only one i know of that is running tryouts currently, so you would want to check their website for dates and times.

Gunston and Alexandria have definitely not set tryout dates and times yet and I don’t know about SYC

Depends where you live; Alexandria, Arlington, and SYC are you best bets. Gunston is missing several age groups, LMVSC is missing several age groups.

Just ask them for how many teams are in each age group; the more the better.

OP here. She's a 2006. Came from a competitive team by MN standards. Not sure how it translates to the level in this area.

I'm a Gunston parent. If she wants to play and have fun, I'd recommend them. The 05s play in NCSL 1 and are competitive in that division. Their kids make the West Po and Mt Vernon teams, so it's competitive enough to make high school teams. If she wants to play at a very high level or to play in college, I'd look to SYC or Alexandria.

The LMVSC 05 group is pretty good and you should look into their tryouts. If you'd like to remain 06, SYC and Alexandria would be your best bets.
