Stomach bloat after eating

Anonymous
I've taken a medication for IBS (Bentyl) for several years now -- typically just one or two a day and not four (as it states on the Rx) since it can give me a slightly spacey feeling. This seems to help keep really severe GI pain at bay. In spite of that, I find that my stomach/belly gets really bloated after every meal, so that by the end of the day, my pants (that start out loose in the morning) are often so tight that I have to take them off or undo the button. This is only at home, mind. you.

I'm 5'8" and 135 lbs, so am not overweight. I eat a lot of fruit, veggies, and grains and only eat meat maybe once a week or every other week. I hope to not alter my diet too much, but are there other things I might try?

I experienced the same thing and discovered that two things were going on:

1. acid over-production. Try taking something like Pepcid AC or Prilosec for a couple of days and see if you no longer have the bloat after eating. I ultimately got off of the acid-suppressors, and only use Pepcid AC occasionally. I also have dropped some foods that were problematic (greek yogurt, bananas, and others). I never thought of myself as as having an acid problem, but after many tests, as well as a colonoscopy and endoscopy, as well as an expensive antibiotic for SIBO and following the low FODMAP diet... turns out Prilosec made very fast, noticeable difference.

2. Are you taking ibuprofen even a couple of times a week? It is terrible for your stomach! I had no idea! I thought it was a great OTC painreliever and I was taking it now and then for a headache or joint problem or whatever. I wasn't taking it every day... but a couple of times a week. It caused my gastritis. Now, I avoid it if at all possible. And then if I ever take it, I only take it with food.

These are a couple of easy things to try without going to a doctor.

You mentioned grains - any chance of gluten intolerance/celiac?

Sort of -- the food baby is small, but super uncomfortable/borderline painful. I will try the Pepcid for now. I don't take Ibuprofen very often, so don't think that is it, but will stop altogether to see if it helps.

Oh, sorry -- didn't see the suggestion about gluten intolerance. I don't think that's what is going on. I have a friend with celiac and it seems like she gets pretty violently ill if she eats gluten. That isn't the case with me.

That wouldn't be definitive - it can cause bloating without causing violent illness, and can even be present with no symptoms at all.
