Finding Tutors

Anonymous
Hello! I'm new at this and would love to find tutors for our kids for over the summer, mostly because they are interested in math and history, and I'd love to keep them at it. How do you all find tutors? Do you go through agencies? Care.com? At colleges? What do you wish you would have known before you hired tutors for your kids? What do they tend to charge? Tell me all the things!

Ask some of your kids current teachers. They know who is tutoring and can give you some names. I always like to use teachers because they know the content better and will direct the focus of the tutoring sessions a little more imo.

I tried to ask teachers for referrals but they were either full, burnt out, or otherwise uninterested. I used Wyzant for an online tutor and just recently switched to in person using an agency because they were able to identify a tutor right away with interest and availability.

I found a great computer science tutor on Nextdoor.

My kid’s math tutor is a statistics professor at a large university. I did not think he would agree to do this because my kid is in middle school and a college prof is way above what he needs but it’s worked out very well. Ask around. Friend of a friend.
