Would you ever contact someone who just left the position you are interviewing for?

I had a final interview this week for a nonprofit organization. My last job was so downright awful, highlighted by an awful boss, that I up and quit w/o another job. That was almost two years ago now and I am still feeling the sting. I really want this next job I go to to be a good one where I will stay a while, with a boss who is great, or at least tolerable. (I have a 4 yr old and a 13-wk old so someone who respects balance is also key.)

I haven't been able to get a good read on the woman who would be my boss in this job but have gotten some vibes that she may be a little standoffish. I'm also a bit suspicious because she's been the head of the organization for four years and this will be the third person to fill this position in the time she's been there. I know where the guy works now who vacated the position and have access to his email, but don't know him at all. If you were in my situation, would you ever cold email someone to ask them the scoop? I think there's a decent chance that he is still friendly with other people at this organization. Oh, and I would not even think of contacting him unless until I had an offer on the table, but still wondering if it's a bad idea. Thanks.

I totally would do that.

I always ask in my interview of my potential boss what she thinks someone who worked for her would say were her strengths and weaknesses as a manager. I truly do interview my potential boss as well. It turns the tables and throws them off balance and I think it has served me well. If they think they are perfect in every way, time to move on.

yes, I would totally do that too. it's part of your own due diligence if you want to look at it that way.

Yes, absolutely. They're checking your references. So think of this as checking your boss's references. Good luck!

Yes, do it, but wait until you have an offer. Don't expect much, but pauses and funny answers can tell a lot. Also, he might be able to put you in contact with someone who can tell you more.
