Is there Pre-K curriculum?

Anonymous
Does it differ by the program or is it standarized based on the county/district? My son never attended preschool and I am thinking of putting him in Pre-K, but not sure how to base by research. Thank you.

It depends on the school. A public pre-k program usually has its curriculum and goals on the district's website. A private pre-k program should be able to give you a copy of its curriculum. Public programs really stress readiness for their K program while some private pre-k programs vary in their academic readiness. And most people lump pre-k in with "preschool." When I talk about pre-school, I mean a program for 2-5 year olds (that includes what some schools refer to as pre-k). GL.

I think some of the basics that most pre-ks (although generally not Montessori) aim for are: recognized their letters and numbers, know colors and shapes, learn the sounds that the letters make (phonics), count objects, and count by 2s, 10s, etc., tell time and understand the calendar (order of the days of the week, months, seasons, etc.), and write their names/other letters.

Some of this is pre pre-k, but kids who don't have the skills would be brought up to speed.
