Vaccine reporting to state health department

Anonymous
I am assuming, but cannot confirm via google, that pharmacies and other non-government providers of covid vaccines are reporting to the appropriate state health department the names, addresses, type of vaccine given, and date of vaccination (so that those of us getting vaccines at those places can later access those records from our state health department to obtain proof of vaccination). This has to be the case, but can someone who knows or who has better googling skills than I do please confirm?

You are asking about IIS, or the state-based Immunization Information Systems.
- General info here: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/programs/iis/index.html
- FAQ here: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/programs/iis/resources-refs/faq.html

Maryland ImmuNet here: https://phpa.health.maryland.gov/OIDEOR/IMMUN/Pages/immunet.aspx
- Specifically on COVID here: https://phpa.health.maryland.gov/OIDEOR/IMMUN/Shared%20Documents/ImmuNet_COVID19-Vaccine-Registration-Guide.pdf [click on #5] -->
(5) Reporting Administered Doses of COVID-19 Vaccines
All administered doses of COVID-19 vaccines must be reported to ImmuNet within 24 hours.
See the ImmuNet website (here) for more information about reporting COVID-19 vaccinations to ImmuNet, including links to the list of required data elements.

Virginia VIIS here: https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/immunization/
- Specifically on COVID here: https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/covid-19-faq/vaccination/
Scroll down to "Vaccination: After Being Fully Vaccinated with COVID-19 Vaccine ", choose "What protected health information is reported to the state when getting vaccinated? What is reported to the CDC? (Last updated 2/17/21) " -->
Vaccine registration requires that you provide your name and date of birth. The registration process will also ask for the following information: race, ethnicity, sex, phone number, and address, including county/zip code of residence. You will also be asked questions to see if you have a medical condition that places you in a special risk group that is at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19. NOTE: Information gathered will only be used for vaccination purposes. Your information is safe when provided through the call center or the Virginia Department of Health pre-registration system.

All doses administered will be entered into the Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS).

I don't know about DC.

^^Mind you, that is what people are supposed to do. It is not a guarantee that it is being done, but I don't see a reason to suspect otherwise.

And lastly, here is the IIS for DC:

Can't speak to other states, but in Maryland, Maryland MyIR is a free website service that allows consumers to view and print copies of their official vaccination records directly from ImmuNet, Maryland's immunization information system. Go to md.myir.net and register. I did this and can see records of my Covid, shingles, pneumococcal, and even flu vaccinations. You will be able to print certificates of immunization from the site as well.

This is great. I can't find anything like it for Virginia.

This is great. I got vaccinated at a pharmacy (Giant) in MD and my records are in that system.

There is a link to VIIS earlier in the thread. If you click through to the FAQ, you can find this:

How can I obtain a copy of my immunization record from VIIS?

You can contact VIIS staff by phone at 804-864-8055 or by email at VIISInfo@vdh.virginia.gov

Thanks. I should have been clear--I was referring to the capability in Maryland to see vaccine records electronically. That is what I can't find (and doesn't seem to exist) in Virginia.

Has anyone called this number or contacted VIIS by email and been able to confirm the accuracy of any covid vaccine records?

Right. I meant to convey that the official guidance on the website indicates there is not an online/electronic option.

Virginia appears to be one of, at most, a handful of states that does not provide internet access to vaccination records (according to the CDC website).

We are referring here to covid vaccines, not testing.

Are you asking about a COVID test or a COVID vaccination?

If you are asking about COVID test results, it probably belongs in another thread.

Just to clarify -- providers have electronic access, as do some others. It's just not available in Virginia to the general public, even for your own record.

So your physician office presumably can get an updated copy.

An authorized user are:

•Health care provider or health plans
•Schools head start programs, and day care centers.
•Individuals or organizations as required by law or in the management of a public health crisis
•Other immunization registries

https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/immunization/viis/faq/

Becoming an authorized user requires registration, but after that, you can just log in.
